Multi-Tool (Fein vs Genesis/HF/PowerFist/Chicago)
When I sold my company, one of the tools dear to me was the Fein
MultiTool. That thing got me out of trouble so many times that I vowed to immediately buy myself a new one after the sale of the company was completed. Then I remembered the many mentions of the HF version in here so I went out to investigate. Turns out that there are many versions, mostly in different clothes(colours and packaging). I broke down and bought the Genesis version. Identical to the HF version. For the price of a couple of Fein blades. Works just as well as the Fein, with one exception. When I used to really lean into the Fein, it barely complained. This Genesis slows down and complains. Longevity is likely on the side of the Fein. But for just over 40 bucks? Nothing to talk about. Such a deal. |

But for just over 40 bucks? Nothing to talk about. Such a deal. Yeah.... I am tired of beating myself up over not spending a wad of dough for some tools. I want the cheaper tools to be crappy, to be undependable, to not work well, and to generally let me down. However, that isn't the case with most of them these days. For years now I have been matching the task/tool/price, and the Chiawanese tools seem to do quite well. I threw in the towel altogether when I saw that my favorite brand, Milwaukee, manufactures all but one or two tools in Chiawan now. I have a great compressor that I bought at HF for $89 bucks. Great for wagging between jobsites. I have a couple of grinders that won't die, as well as a 7" polishing kit from HF that work as well as when new. The HF multitool was a show stopper. I use the HF single speed model all the time, and while it gets hot, it never bogs down. I have plunge cut through 1 1/2" of asphalt roofing to do roof repair and install a drain, cut 20' of siding to move the bottom of the wood 2" off the adjoining surface, cut door jambs, used the scraper blade to peel old asphalt off flashings, etc., etc. You name it. IF I had known how handy that damn tool was, I would have bought the Fein and been happy to drop the $250 + blades. But at $35 with 3 blades and the sanding attachment, it made it that much better. Besides, at $35, even my tightfisted squarehead self couldn't find a reason not to buy one. HF even makes a variable speed version (although they sell so fast they never have them in the store).. It is often on sale for $59. Since so many DeWalt, Porter Cable, Hitachi, Stanley, Milwaukee, Duo Fast, Bostitich, Makita, and on and on are all built in Asia these days, my heartburn went away long ago about buying tools from Asian countries. I believe in many cases the models from different companies come down to different colors of plastic injection molding pieces and the cheesy sticker (previously known as the badge). All I look for now is a sturdy build, reliability and reasonable price. Robert |

I am tired of beating myself up over not spending a wad of dough for some tools. I want the cheaper tools to be crappy, to be undependable, to not work well, and to generally let me down. However, that isn't the case with most of them these days. Precisely! I got the little 3/4hp Ingy there at HF and it's handy for jobsites. I fill a 5gal portable tank and connected a 50'x3/8" lightweight hose to it for convenience. Wunnerful! I fit a male connector on the pump and just connect the hose to it when the pressure drops below 55psi, about the lowest the brad nailah will go. Ooh, roofing cleanup, you say? I need to redo my back porch roof with roll roofing this summer and that might be a great tool for cutting the old crap off. I'm perfectly happy with the $34 single speed. I cut notches for 4x4s with it quite often. What a timesaver! That's why I became an HF convert early on. Some tools are cheap enough to use once and throw away if necessary, but it's very, very seldom necessary. My last purchase was their portable bandsaw. ($60 with coupon, plus $19 for a trio of Milwaukee bimetal blades.) Before that it was the 12" SCMS for $149 (less $30 with coupon.) All work quite well. And if a HF tool fails, you can simply return it for a no-hassle refund. I did that with their knockout punch set, whose die threads were made in China and the screw made in Taiwan, probably to different tolerances by blind deaf-mutes. It was a loose fit and stripped out on the second turn. I didn't try another one, as a Greenlee 1.5/2" set was sent to me by an eBay vendor for the same price and it worked just fine. -- The most powerful factors in the world are clear ideas in the minds of energetic men of good will. -- J. Is there no brand loyalty any more? No reward for the HF innovation of being first-to-market after the Fein patent expired? No thought given to keeping the Chinese working? |

We have Busy Bee who sell some clone brand and then there is King who makes
their own version of everything known in powertools. I picked a King up a contractor's tool store that also sells Fein. Variable speed for $59, and then I bought a few of the carbide blades - tile cutter, and rasp "Robatoy" wrote in message ... Mike M You are so right. I worked on countertops in casinos... between 3 AM and 6 AM Wednesdays only. I had duplicates of most tools, in fact justabout the whole shop in my trucks. The problem did not begin as black and white, and it did not happen overnight. And in fact, it is still not black and white in every case. The problem happened progressively over many years because too many consumers wanted to save a few pennies and could not care less about putting their fellow countrymen out of work at the same time. The "greed is good" and "jobs Americans won't do" mindset of many of our politicians is what led the way. Trade is good when your trading partner has natural resources or a climate that you do not have. Trade is bad when a communist country uses slave labor in subhuman working conditions to underprice your own workers. The problem is not just whether they are making adequate products, the problem is that they are gobbling up our manufacturing capability, to the point that we cannot manufacture anything for ourselves. Besides putting your neighbor out of work, there is a significant danger in that. Democracies would band together, if our leadership were capable enough. Unfortunately, George Bush Junior's was probably the most suck ass presidency in the 20th century. To the partisan blind right wing zealots who cannot think for themselves... You are the very reason that Obama (the other extreme) is in the White House. Current Republicans are nothing like Ronald Reagan. You would have never heard him say anything like "greed is good" or "jobs Americans won't do". That "me first" bull**** is a glaring sign of pathetic leadership, something Ronald Reagan (temporarily) helped sweep away. -- Path: news.astraweb.com!border5.newsrouter.astraweb.com! npeer03.iad.highwinds-media.com!news.highwinds-media.com!feed-me.highwinds-media.com!postnews.google.com!a30g2000yqn.googlegr oups.com!not-for-mail From: "nailshooter41 aol.com" nailshooter41 aol.com Newsgroups: rec.woodworking Subject: Multi-Tool (Fein vs Genesis/HF/PowerFist/Chicago) Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2010 00:10:07 -0700 (PDT) Organization: http://groups.google.com Lines: 49 Message-ID: 4a430913-f359-4cc7-ad0d-1b5ae205721a a30g2000yqn.googlegroups.com References: 7f9e848c-5a90-4332-949c-182d6b33773b w31g2000yqb.googlegroups.com NNTP-Posting-Host: 68.91.254.232 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Trace: posting.google.com 1277709007 21303 127.0.0.1 (28 Jun 2010 07:10:07 GMT) X-Complaints-To: groups-abuse google.com NNTP-Posting-Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2010 07:10:07 +0000 (UTC) Complaints-To: groups-abuse google.com Injection-Info: a30g2000yqn.googlegroups.com; posting-host=68.91.254.232; posting-account=5uXq-QoAAABPQiXxb23LQUNDtg70xsCM User-Agent: G2/1.0 X-HTTP-UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.10) Gecko/20100504 Firefox/3.5.10 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729),gzip(gfe) |

Ditto ... you could calf rope with that thing! --www.e-woodshop.net Last update: 4/15/2010 KarlC@ (the obvious) You mean there's a tool on the end of that cord somewhere? A Festeringly-priced tool at that. -- The most powerful factors in the world are clear ideas in the minds of energetic men of good will. -- J. Arthur Thomson |

I use it to add about twenty feet to almost all my power tools, vacuum and shop cleaners, etc. Why didn't I think of that! (SMACKS FOREHEAD!!) I DID think of that but took it one step further. I installed a connector so if I didn't need all of the length, I could just disconnect the added cord and still use the cord that came with the tool straight into the receptacle. That longer cord is also usable with other tools. Pretty clever, eh? They call these "extension cords" I saw them at Home Depot. I got the 100' 12ga orange jobby at eBay for $45, delivered. It's good for anything up to and including the table saur. -- The most powerful factors in the world are clear ideas in the minds of energetic men of good will. -- J. Arthur Thomson |

I come up with a good idea and somebody beat me to it. I even developed the idea out to the option of making different lengths. Oh well. Have you ever run a chop saw on a zip cord extension? I'll give it 7 seconds before you say: "Saaaaaay, what's that molten plastic smell? It seems to be getting stronger. Yikes, looky them sparks! Had my HF for about 2 years and still running fein. It will bog down when pushed on but it just works and hasn't failed me yet, to my surprise! -- You can lead them to LINUX but you can't make them THINK ! But for just over 40 bucks? Nothing to talk about. Such a deal. HF isn't my normal choice for tools but there have been exceptions. I bought one of their cheap ($20) brad nailers as a backup for my 18ga Porter Cable years ago. It has gotten a fair amount of use and is hanging in there just fine. I own a couple of their air tools and no complaints A few years ago, in a weak moment, I bought one of their $99 mortisers. The hold down apparatus sucks but the chisels were quite good and it cuts square holes and lines them up with some care. Our son just bought one of the subject multi-tools and I am waiting for his progress report. Or I might just buy one when I'm in Joplin this weekend. RonB |

It's a tool - an expendable deduction, not some Norman Rockwell collector plate ya hang on a wall! No, I'm serious. Use a strong magnet to locate and avoid any fasteners and use an old blade with a slow feed. Pin point depth control, a track to smooth out the cut, and excellent dust collection. What's not to like?
