Hi Folks,

I am using Google Groups to read this usenet group. But I am inundated
with spam. This morning I had 11 pages of Fake Jewlery to scan looking
for a woodworking related post before I got to one. Is there a way to
filter this junk using Google Groups?

Joe,
You're going to get told to get a newsgroup reader--I've got one, it
doesn't work. There is also a googlegroups program that works with
Foxmire (supposedly) to filter out this crap. So far, I've had no luck
with that, either. I'm obviously doing something wrong in both cases,
but...no one can tell me what.

With Pismire--Firefox to those of us who don't really like it but are
too lazy to change--you need to get an add-on called Grease Monkey, at
which time you can, I'm told, add the filters from Google Groups
filter...go to googlegroupsfilter as a search on Google Groups.

If you figure it out, let me know.

I'm about to bail on the NG because of the spam. Google itself should
offer some kind of filter, but prefers not to, for whatever rationale,
which is the reason for the Robin Hood's barn methods, I guess. If I
can't get that to work after this book is out, then screw it. Like
you, I wade through anywhere from two to a dozen pages of much to get
to one grain of rice, while wondering how many I missed in the slop
before. Not worth it on a long term basis.

Not using Google, it took me about 10 secs to kill all of the current
crap. Most of the time my provider kills the worst, leaving me little to
have to do

Using OE I'm having fair success using the message rules where the
"SUBJECT" line contains the words _______. The second rule I employ is
where the "FROM" line contains the words _________. I don't delete them
outright though; I change them to a color (blue) which allows me a quick
scan over the morning's headers. View is also set to hide "READ" messages.
I didn't know there that many brands of watches.

I have had some success doing this too. But the recent spam storm seems to
fly by many of the filters I set up.

Could you give some examples of what you filter on? Maybe I need to do
something different. I don't see how filtering on the From line would make
much difference since the spammers change their addy all the time.

Thanx

You do not have to filter on the whole "From" name. Use the commonly used
part of the name like wholesale or watches. These for example work pretty
well,
contains ' or '*watches*' or 'watch' or
'

Words like 'watch' 'handbag' 'sneaker' and a whole ****load of 'brand'
names that I copy from the SPAM headers like Breitling, Gucci, Citizen, etc.
The list probably has 80 or 90 words in it. Don't forget the generic ones
either; like 'penis' 'vagina' 'viagra' cialis' 'bootyf**k' 'sex' and on and
on and on . . .

On the FROM line words like 'sales' ' sneaker' and all the ones you see
that are common to their posts. Forget the numeric, they change those with
every post.

I've sort of made it a game which is why I have unchecked the delete box
on the options and gone to 'color. Gives me a way to keep score. The 80 I
captured this morning got a 100% rating!

I have been doing that. What I did recently was to include more words for
each rule. Maybe if I go back to using single words per rule, would this
help. I am thinking that maybe OE needs all the words to be there to invoke
the rule.

OE gives you the option to have it trigger on matching
any one or all of the listed words in a given rule.
Words are case insensitive, too.

To set the desired choice, bring up the "News Rules"
panel, select the desired rule, and click on the
word list as though you were adding a new rule. There
will be an "Options" button visible.

It would NOT help. OE would act the same if a triggering word is one of
hundreds in one rule or if a single word in hundreds of rules. Sure is a lot of
work to create hundreds of rules though.

I only have two news rules in OE: one I call the "From Rule" and one I call the
"Subject Rule". I also use nfilter (NewsProxy) to catch what OE can't...
specifically crossposted messages.

As far as the "From Rule" is concerned, it does not require entire email
addresses, @signs, or asterisks to serve as wild cards. Filtering anything
"from" .cn will remove any message from China... a major spammer. Filtering
"from" yahoo.com will remove EVERY posting from yahoo.com.

But suppose you don't want to nuke every posting that comes from yahoo. Suppose
you value the postings of and you don't want it nuked. OE
runs through the filter rules in the order they exist. Position a rule that
says IF the message is from
, show it and stop processing more
rules. Frankly, I doubt you'll need to do this as I haven't missed anybody who
posts from yahoo, gmail or hotmail yet. I just nuke them all.

What I'm left with is maybe a dozen spam messages a week between ALL my
newsgroups. Which reminds me, make your rules apply to all news messages. Why
duplicate your work in each newsgroup?

My rule of thumb is to filter on subject anything that would not be
brought up in normal discussion in this group. Brand names, male
enhancement... A couple people have posted their filter list recently,
you might want to do a search for them.

(Viagra was the least beneficial discovery to society in recent history.
The drug isn't bad in and of itself, it's all the "male enhancement"
commercials!)

Reminds me of that guy who was whining on the newsgroup awhile back that he
was upset about all the "illegitimate" penis enlargement spammers. Cuz he
was a "legitimate" penis enlargement company! Apparently we were too dense
to tell the difference. LOL

Get something capable of filtering on the Message-ID header (such as
NewsProxy, aka nfilter). Then drop anything with googlegroups in the
Message-ID. See my sig for details.

I have downloaded and installed NewsProxy. I have also downloaded your

Do I need to do anything else? Do I need to down load the filters into

You have to configure "NewsProxy" to use your ISP's NNTP server. You
then configure your mail reader to use "localhost" as the server to
interface with "NewsProxy".

Any ideas?

The NNTP server should be what you had in the Server Address
entry under the Server tab of the account properties edit
dialog.

1. Bring up NewsProxy.
2. Select Edit -- Configuration.
3. Select Network
4. Fill in your news server address in the "Server Name
or IP number" box (eg. news.newshosting.com).
5. Fill in the correct Server Port number for your
ISP (standard is 119, but your provider may offer
others).
6. Fill in Listen Port. Standard is 119.

7. In your newsreader configuration set the server address
or name to "localhost".
For Outlook express this would entail editing the
Properties for your given News account by selecting
Tools -- Accounts, then choose your News account, then
select the Server tab.
8. Under the Advanced tab, set the Server Port Number to
match the Listen port entered for NewsProxy in step 6
(119 is standard).

You need to save the filter file as "nfilter.dat" in the same directory as the
NewsProxy executable; if there's one there already, overwrite it.

Obviously you need to run NewsProxy, too, and configure it properly --
connection settings should be exactly what you are using now on your
newsreader.

The final step is to change the settings on the newsreader to point at
NewsProxy (IP address 127.0.0.1) instead of at your news server.

Wow!

A firestorm of responses. Guess I hit a topical topic that time.
Thanks for all the suggestions. One of my problems is that my ISP
doesn't provide newsgroup service which is why I use Google Groups. I
am going to give Google Group Kill File a try and see if that works.
If not I may have to give this one up. I don't have time to go through
10 pages of trash to get one message on topic.

Thanks again.
