glueing steam bent oak .. can it be done while hot?
I am building a bookshelf with quarter round shelves. I have cut them of oak
plywood in the shape of rectangle with quarter of circle on the side. I am planing to edge them with 2x1 oak board steam bend to go along the curvature. I do plan to bend it on the plywood shelf itself. I am afraid that after drying even while clamped to the shelf it will straigten a bit and it may be difficult to glue it back to the shelf. Is it possible to glue while hot, bend it clamp it and have it done? If it can be done what glue would work in those conditions? thanks for your opinions pawel |

I wouldn't glue while hot. I don't think glue does well on hot surfaces.
Also, the moisture content of the wood will be too high. You can allow for springback by reducing the radius of the mold. How much? It is a trial and error thing. I think somewhere a long time back, I saw a formula to approximate the springback, but I am not sure where or how accurate it was supposed to be. Make sure you leave the wood clamped up at least 15 or 20 minutes until the wood cools. This helps limit the springback. Then allow the wood to dry some to allow the moisture content to reduce. Yes! Use one of the water activated poly glues and clamp the strips in
place before they dry out and cool. Only downside I can see is the tension developed after the wood cools but this would be minimal in the long grain. Bugs |
