Default What is this material?

What is this stuff?

http://mocoloco.com/archives/gus_bench_icff_may_05.jpg

The description says (available from main page):

"Detail from a new bench from Gus made from construction beam material."

The end grain looks like compressed worms.

It is Laminated Veneer Lumber, commonly known as LVL's. It is used for
high strength headers, beams, and joists in (mostly) residential
construction. Now a cool idea would be to make, say, a picture frame
from endgrain slices of scrap. Wouldn't that be cool!

I bet that it would make an interesting turned form as well.

Patriarch,
thinking maybe a 36 grit gouge would be in order...

You think that's a weird material? Try "Fluff"
http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/002733.html
or "extruded pathogen-free municipal solid waste compost" to its
friends.
