You did good Kevin!! If at first you don't succeed......

I love both the base and the detail on the top. What is the base made of?

And tell us a little about how you made the railing around the top.

And the glass, I have seen many times, but I can't recall just where. Is it
something common?

It is a great looking lamp. Congratulations!

Thank you. The base is a hunk of well weathered cherry that a friend in
Oregon sent me. Gnarly enough to serve as a "rocky shoreline" me
thinks. My only complaint is that one end is weathered and the other
isn't. But no matter - a minor nit.

The railing around the top was made by gluing up the two layers of the
"handrail" independently, then truing one face on each ring. They were
probably 1/4" thick each at that point. I then took one, and centered
it on the purpleheart & maple "floor" section, holding it in place w/two
sided tape (the turners best friend!), and drilled 1/8" holes all the
way through the ring, and in about 1/8" to 3/16" in the floor section.

I then glued both rings together, and trimmed them on the lathe down to
about 1/4" thick. Because the joints overlap, they're quite strong
after being glued together. The initial truing of one face requires a
gentle touch. That gave me a finished ring with holes in one side, but
not the other. After that it was just a matter of cutting some brass
rod to an appropriate length and mixing up a bit of epoxy. I put a
finish on the wood first to help keep the epoxy from blotching the wood.

I used 5 minute epoxy. Should have used 30 minute. Next time. g

The glass is available at about any hardware store. They're just
replacement globes for common porch lights. You probably have one
outside your back door! They seem to work pretty well though - not quite
a Fresnel lens, but they look the part.

Best...

Ace Hardware. They're just porch light replacement globes. They work
pretty well though. The fixture itself is rated for 75 watts, but I
always use a 15 watt bulb since the globe isn't vented. It might not
matter, but I'd rather not get the heat build up...
