In my rustic furniture days, I slapped a coat of Watco Danish Oil finish on everything. This was the custom at the time. I used the dark walnut color. I offered to use the medium or light walnut color for some customers. I stained up some samples to show them what it would look like. But they rejected it because it was not an "authentic" walnut color. So, yeah, walnut is a color.
