Apparently not. What address did you send it to? (Just the part before the @,
please -- I'll assume that the rest is 'milmac dot com').

Default Doug Miller, troll filters

Hello Doug,

Years ago I set up and used Nfilter on another computer.

I am not as smart anymore.

I am using Outlook Express and Giganews. Is there a Set Up for Dummies
somewhere?

Thank you,

David.

Until you get back on track with nFilter, try the following two "News" rules
in OE:

`Apply this rule after the message arrives:

Where the Subject line contains 'Fake' or 'watches' or 'shoes' or 'china' or
'tiffany' or 'cartier' or 'rolex' or 'POLO' or 'wholesale' or '****' or
'boobs' or 'penis' or 'viagra' or 'watch'

Delete it

`Apply this rule after the message arrives:

Where the From line contains 'watches' or '.cn' or 'china' or
'googlemail.com' or 'watchec.com'

Delete it

This will take care of 99% of the current spate of spam without the hassle
of configuring nFilter, a product I do like, but prefer not to have to deal
with except under the most trying circumstances.

Strictly FWIW ...

I just came back to NFilter and NewsProxy. I downloaded v1.2.4 (do a
google search on newsproxy v1.2.4) and set it up with Doug's NFilter.
Had forgotten how well it works! In answer to another querry, I am
running Vista Home Premium and Thunderbird. So far have had no problems
with it.

Default NewsProxy with Outlook Express: Set Up for Dummies

NewsProxy and Nfilter are one and the same program.... free and effective.

Download Nfilter at http://www.milmac.com/np-120.exe

Open Outlook Express:

1.) Go to Tools Accounts News Giganews Properties Server. Change the Server Name to "localhost" (without the quotation marks). Don't change the account name or password from what's working now. Click on OK and back out of Outlook Express.

2. Double click on the NewsProxy icon on the bottom right of your taskbar.

3.) Go to Edit Configuration General:

4.) Go to Edit Configuration Network

5.) Go to Edit Configuration Flood

6.) Go to Edit Configuration Message Headers and LEAVE THE SECRET KEY ALONE! Click on Apply. Click on OK.

7.) From Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\NewsProxy. Rename "nfilter.dat" to "oldnfilter.dat". Copy Doug Miller's latest troll filter into the same directory and make sure it's named "nfilter.dat" so that you replace the original while still retaining a copy.

8.) Also from Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Joe Blow\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and insert a new shortcut to Newsproxy in it so Newsproxy will start when you reboot. (Place your cursor in a clear spot, right click once, select New Shortcut... you should be able to figure it out from there.)

9.) Reboot. That's it. If you don't want to reboot, make sure that Outlook Express and Newsproxy are closed, then crank up Newsproxy from your start menu, followed by Outlook Express. I leave Newsproxy running all the time whether Outlook Express is running or not.

As a general note: if you ever get error messages from Outlook Express when you're trying to read news messages that says the server can't connect or can't be found (or words to that effect), always check your task bar on the bopttom right to make sure Newsproxy is running. On rare occasions you may find the need to shut Newsproxy down and restart it... very rare occasions.

One more note: I filter heavily on crossposted messages as it's been my experience they're the source of a lot of spam. Be prepared for a dramatic reduction in your newsgroup traffic.... perhaps you will see only 25% of what you saw before you installed the filter. Pretty amazing!

OK, boys and girls.... that's all you get for free.
