Default OT But A Sad Note

It's pleasant to have a lunch bagel and cream cheese, but sad to note the
passing of the Bakers' Dozen in response to the rise in minimum wage in
Michigan. Price of the twelve is up as well.

Another tradition falls victim to the march of time. Don't do donuts, but
I will have to check at the bakery next time I'm there to see if they've
taken away the bonus as well.

Not sure the minimum wage has anything to do with it. Here (just
outside Philadelphia) the Manhatten Bagel place has raised its prices
each year (but we still get a baker's dozen) using the cost of flour as
an excuse one year and energy costs this year. They are up to 79 cents
for each bagel.

The local Philly soft pretzel baker (about three miles from the bagel
place) used to sell a real soft pretzel for 50 cents and kept that
price for three years. Until last month when they DROPPED their price
to 25 cents. The soft pretzel is as large as the bagel, boiled in lye
compared to water for the bagel and they are both then baked.

Seems that two new soft pretzel bakeries have opened up nearby. The
bagel store owner is just as arrogant as ever, his family connections
have led to government sales and the employees have trouble counting to
13 or 26 correctly.

I keep hoping for bagel competition!
