Only problem is a house fire that can commence if the candle burns all
the way down. Are you selling them? You may be dragged into a case if
your candle holder is the cause of a fire. If you want to have long
candles used in the holders, use the cups.

An alternative if you just want to make something to house a candle
for softer light is to make them to hold large tea lights (these are
in an aluminium cup already).

Alan

geoff,

Try copper pipe. It's not tapered but I remember using it once and it
worked fine. Not sure what size - 3/4" or 1". If you are dead set on
the taper, drill a tapered hole in something like rock maple, turn a
tapered ram to fit, put the copper pipe in the tapered hole and use the
ram to size it.
