Default Kitchen worktop moisture barrier

The Ikea website suggests installing a moisture barrier between a
dishwasher/washing machine and a solid wood worktop. As they apparently no
longer sell these moisture barriers, what would be a suitable material to
use?

Thanks for your help.

Dishwashers and washing machines have vents that allow steam to escape. The
steam can condense against the bottom surface of the worktop and cause
damage or rot, especially on natural timber. Placing a sheet of any kind of
water proof material on the under side of the worktop to stop the
condensation from touching it should work. Polythene rubbish bags would do
this for you, as long as it is stapled, or tacked, and the edges taped to
the under side of the worktop tightly enough to stop the condensation from
getting in behind it.

You could also locate the venting points on the machines and extend them
outward away from the front edge of the worktop. This would let any steam
escape into the room and condense somewhere else. Finding good fitting
pipework to do this properly might be a pain though.

Make sure the worktop is completely dry before placing any water proofing on
it though, as you'll only be holding existing water in which would normally
have escaped by itself.
