The application is for a range of things to fit on a camera tripod. I

facto standard in camera equipment and accessories, there being 2
sizes, 1/4" and 1/3", both Whit.

Cameras are not Whitworth, they're UNC, which is a different thread
form (60°cutting tool, not 55°). For diameters under 1/2" the pitches
are the same, so you can interchange them without even much
gorillation. Also tripod bushes are short, so you can jam almost
anything the right diameter in there and there's not enough length for
a mismatched pitch to cause (much) trouble.

I think you're out of luck on Whitworth inserts. But 'merkins still
think that metric is the spawn of satan, so you should have no trouble
at all buying 1/4-20 UNC inserts because it's a dead common thread
over there.

My favourite shop would be Lee Valley, because they're lovely people
to deal with. McMaster Carr seems popular too, and Google knows more.

Thanks for the tips. I had a look in Google about the thread type,
and tripped over the discussion over UNC and whit. I believe that I
need a 1/4" 20 tpi thread, as I found years ago one of the inserts I
am looking for now, (brass) however as it was in an ironmongers in the
UK I suspect it was whit not UNC. However, as you say, the tripod
bush is short, and should be no problem which ever way it is. I am
just a bit reluctant to get something so small in from the US!

Thanks to you and the others for the suggestions as to sources.

Cheers,
Eric.
