I moved to Eternal September in 2010, which is when
IIRC Virgin said they were closing their news server.

It is OK, considering it is free, but does have hiccoughs from
time to time, so I have recently paid for news.individual.net

I had been with Virginmedia for getting on for nearly 10 years and I
used the VM news server.

Fibre was laid in my street and so I jumped ship from Virginmedia to
Vodafone.

Vodafone don't have a news server.

Being the tight git I am, I signed up with AIOE and also with Eternal
September.

Both news servers do not do binaries so if that is your thing, then
you're looking at a paid service from the likes of Astraweb or Giganews.

snip at 10EUR per annum and they also do a two week free trial
account.
Also use Astraweb https://www.astraweb.com/ don't use their monthly
account, bought a block 25GB which has lasted years, much cheaper.

I use the VM news server - have been on Usenet groups for many years
using various servers. I have not had this email.

I can give +1 for Astraweb - just buy a block not a monthly sub and it
will last you probably a lifetime if you use mainly news and not binary
groups. It also has a long retention so you can browse back over the
years, at least to 2003 I think.

I got an email from Virgin on Monday which says:

"We wanted to give you a heads-up that the Usenet platform is being
removed from the Virgin Media service on 30th June 2021. After this
time you will not be able to add or remove content from the platform."

So I take it that they're removing the news server. No apology, no
more advice. Pity, because their broadband and cable tv are quite
efficient.

Same happened to me ages ago. Think with TalkTalk.

There are two common free servers, News Eternal Septemeber and AIOE. Worth
having both as they don't both carry the full range of groups.

And NIN costs a massive 10 euros per annum.
