You won't see a finer acting performance than Bernard Hill as Yosser
Hughes in "Yosser's Story". It's not available on iPlayer, unfortunately.

Blackstuff is road surfacing material (Tarmac) originally they had
been a gang of labourers who topped roads (so not the brightest of bulbs
but willing [in some cases more than] to labour).

Down the road, some eastern Europeans are working on what I think will
be a block paved drive when they've finished, but they are being
really thorough with it, digging it out quite deeply. They've
alreadyspent three weeks on it and sent three skips of old tarmac and
earth out. And they've taken off the top layer of tarmac from the
pavement, which I guess was on the owner's instructions.
I've just seen them using a laser level, which I've never seen with
local paviers.
If it does finish up block paved it'll be suitable for parking a tank
I reckon.

Try not to watch them without first having seen the original one-off
film "The Blackstuff" (hence "The Boys From").

It was shown (IIRC) in 1980. Written by the same writer and with largely
the same cast. It paints a background you need to know to get the most
out of TBFTB.

"The Blackstuff" depicted the gang mustering in Liverpool and travelling
by crewbus to Yorkshire (Leeds, I think - the setting for most of the
action).

The later series was set entirely back in Liverpool.

The DVD box set contains the original film as well as the series.

IIRC the bulk of the action was somewhere on Teesside, not that it
alters the story at all.

Could be a SUDS-compliant system. House up the road from me had
this done. There is about 18 inches of something larger than pea-
shingle supporting the blocks which have bigger 'nibs' and are
surrounded by granular material in the larger gap twixt blocks.

All of the series was made in Liverpool. Offhand, I can't think of a
scene set elsewhere.

:-)

Not quite!

The hospital is on the other side of the main road. There is no Edgeware
Road (nor even an Edgware Road) in Liverpool.

I am familiar with the location (Prescot Street, L7) - it was very local
to us as children. AAMOF, the building in whose "grounds" the wall was
erected (and inside which was the balustrade to which an escape rope was
attached) was the old Harper Street Police Station and Bridewell, on a
familiar route from primary school to the local woodwork centre a half
mile away.

Not quite!

The hospital is on the other side of the main road. There is no Edgeware
Road (nor even an Edgware Road) in Liverpool.

I am familiar with the location (Prescot Street, L7) - it was very local
to us as children. AAMOF, the building in whose "grounds" the wall was
erected (and inside which was the balustrade to which an escape rope was
attached) was the old Harper Street Police Station and Bridewell, on a
familiar route from primary school to the local woodwork centre a half
mile away.

Ta. And it is 30 years since I was last the-)

IIRC the bulk of the action was somewhere on Teesside, not that it
alters the story at all.

The wall Yosser badly built was filmed in Liverpool.

All of the series was made in Liverpool. Offhand, I can't think of a
scene set elsewhere.

It was the building site of a new hospital at the end of Edgeware Road.

Edge Lane?

Who is Yosser Hughes?

You won't see a finer acting performance than Bernard Hill as Yosser
Hughes in "Yosser's Story". It's not available on iPlayer,
unfortunately.

I see they've got all five of the BFTB episodes. Bookmarked for future
viewing.

Try not to watch them without first having seen the original one-off
film "The Blackstuff" (hence "The Boys From").

It was shown (IIRC) in 1980. Written by the same writer and with largely
the same cast. It paints a background you need to know to get the most
out of TBFTB.

I saw the original and the series that followed when it was first shown
in the early 80s.

The original was shown on BBC4 last November. I've still got the
recording, so I'll watch that first.

Although all the episodes had their amusing bits, they were, if I
remember correctly, very hard watching at times, particularly "Yosser's
Story". Light entertainment it most certainly wasn't!

"The Blackstuff" depicted the gang mustering in Liverpool and travelling
by crewbus to Yorkshire (Leeds, I think - the setting for most of the
action).

The later series was set entirely back in Liverpool.

The DVD box set contains the original film as well as the series.
