Default "The war to end war"

"The war to end war" (also called "The war to end all wars")
was a term for the First World War of 1914€“1918. Originally
an idealistic slogan, it is now mainly used sardonically
as the First World War not only was not the last war in
history, but its aftermath directly contributed to the
outbreak of the considerably more devastating WWII.
"The War That Will End War" was a 1914 book by H.G. Wells.

=============

H.G. Wells was a socialist & member of the Fabian Society.
In his last book Mind at the End of Its Tether (1945), he
considered the idea that humanity being replaced by another
species might not be a bad idea. He referred to the era
between the two World Wars as "The Age of Frustration".

Wells' views on God & religion changed over his lifetime.
Early in his life he distanced himself from Christianity,
& later from theism, & finally, late in life, he was
essentially atheistic.

Wells died of unspecified causes on 13 Aug 1946, aged 79,
at his home 13 Hanover Terrace, overlooking Regent's Park,
London. In his preface to the 1941 edition of The War in
the Air, Wells had stated that his epitaph should be:
"I told you so. You damned fools"

In politics, gradualism is the hypothesis that social change
can be achieved in small, discrete increments rather than
in abrupt strokes such as revolutions or uprisings.
Gradualism is one of the defining features of political
liberalism and reformism. Machiavellian politics pushes
politicians to espouse gradualism.

In socialist politics and within the socialist movement,
the concept of gradualism is frequently distinguished from
reformism, with the former insisting that short-term goals
need to be formulated and implemented in such a way that
they inevitably lead into long-term goals. It is most
commonly associated with the libertarian socialist concept
of dual power and is seen as a middle way between reformism
and revolutionism.

============

The Fabian Society is a British socialist organisation
whose purpose is to advance the principles of democratic
socialism via gradualist and reformist effort in democracies,
rather than by revolutionary overthrow.

As one of the founding orgs of the Labour Representation
Committee in 1900, and as an important influence upon the
Labour Party which grew from it, the Fabian Society has had
a powerful influence on British politics. Other members of
the Fabian Society have included political leaders from
countries formerly part of the British Empire, such as
Jawaharlal Nehru, who adopted Fabian principles as part of
their own political ideologies. The Fabian Society founded
the London School of Economics & Political Science in 1895.

Today, the society functions primarily as a think tank & is
one of 21 socialist societies affiliated with the Labour
Party. Similar societies exist in Australia (the Australian
Fabian Society), in Canada (the Douglas€“Coldwell Foundation
& the now disbanded League for Social Reconstruction), in
Sicily (Sicilian Fabian Society) & in New Zealand (The NZ
Fabian Society).
In June 2019 the Fabian had 7,136 individual members.
