I was reading up on John Profumo the other day and confirming the fact that after his disgrace and his taking up charity work he lived solely on his private income. His wife the actress Valeries Hobson had retired by then and they lived in some style in a house near Regents Park. However his father was only a barrister, and while they were Italian nobility I thought they were all broke by that point, with crumbling houses and sky high taxes, hence them buggering off to the UK. Don't think many living on a pension they've worked for consider it a private income. Why not ? Apart from the stigma of inherited wealth which you've attached to it, why wouldn't people be proud to have provided themselves with a private income, known only to themselves, the taxman and the pension provider ? michael adams .... |
