Don’t need to. There is no church hall that needs anything
like that level of output in the individual lights.

Seems quite reasonable:
say 30m x 10m = 300 m^2
allowing for using light reflected off ceiling say 1000 lumen per m^2 to
give 200-500 lumen per m^2 on the floor.
= 300,000 lumen ~~ 10 x 20,000 lumen fittings
Right ballpark and as the OP says current light levels are correct for
the diverse range of activities in the hall.
