Wrong, I'm afraid. Since the Euro was established the pound has reduced in value, compared to the Euro, by 20% or so. Nevertheless, the pound has been stronger than the Euro the entire time. Treasury policy since ww2 has been to systematically devalue the pound, in an effort to boost exports. Wrong. If anything, the pound has previously been overvalued. It doesn't seem to have helped the economy of the UK much though. We still lag many competitors. Some years ago it was decided to abandon any role as a manufacturing nation, and rely on financial services. These have been more successful. And the pound is still stronger than the Euro and will bounce back after the speculators have finished. |
