I have a vague memory of getting this message from Thunderbird some years ago. I found that there was a way of allowing it to use more concurrent IMAP connections. Still the it's under Account Settings and then Advanced. Worth trying as it may help.

Regards

You might also want to try reducing rather than increasing it. Some
email servers will only allow a certain number of concurrent connections
from the same IP... TB might be trying to open more than the server allows.

I usually just do something else for a day then it comes right.
Meanwhile use google groups.

He is talking email not news.

If its Virgins server then there are some interesting weirdnesses going on
of late. For example you log in but it says it disconnected unexpectedly.
try again and it sweetness and light. also smtp seems to have a very
aggressive spam detector not echoes by imap or pop3 on delivery, so for
example you get an email from a list, say with films on it, you try to
forward it to a friend and it won't send via Virgin as it says the message
is either too big or contains spam markers. Send the same message via gmail
and there is no issue at all.
