academically strong and the kids in that position would not take jobs

hang ups about doing such work and being deferential to fill the
vacancies.

Your generation created the situation, you should take responsibility for
it. Perhaps if you and a few more of your ilk had got jobs as bus drivers
instead of as a second rate engineer hidden in a hospital basement
