Maybe someone can help...

Looking for a courier service to send a very small parcel (around 15cm x
15cm x 15cm, less than 100g) to the USA. Value is just under £2000.

The usual suspects - InterParcel, Parcel2Go, etc are over £100 (the
insurance takes around £90 of that)

Directly from DHL is around £70.

Any tips for getting a better deal?

TIA.

PS: It is not what you may think - just an item of jewellery for repair...

Cheapest I could see on the parcel comparison sites was about £25 for
the delivery plus £78 for insurance to £2K, so I think you're there or
thereabouts with the DHL quote ...

That premium makes me suspect they get a lot of theft, and if the idea is to
get a treasured item repaired, and not just get compensation, maybe a trip
to the US for a few days might be an idea!

Repair is free once it is in the US (and return postage is on them). No
chance of having it done in the UK for £100 - more like £500...

I looked quickly at Transglobal Express

https://www.transglobalexpress.co.uk...y-and-watches/

They quoted £40 for £1000 insurance, but the cheaper services don't accept jewellery. £70 all in is probably in the region of what you'll be charged.

2nd (related) question:

How do I avoid paying Duty for it again (paid once when bought).

On the courier's website it asks me for a description and the country
where it was made.

When I answer USA (the truthful answer), it advises me that Duty will
need to be paid...

Ask the repairer?

As you already own it is duty even applicable?
Customs & Excise helpline / webchat?
Must be some paperwork to accommodate movements of personal
possessions out/in...

My thought too, but I couldn't find anything on the (rather useless)
website.

I'll try again tomorrow over the phone - hopefully whoever answers will
pass me to the right person.

In the old days before the EU, one filled out a 'carnet' before
exporting some thing. This was a ticket that said that it was only being
exported temprarily. And you could use it to re-import free of tax.

Two funny stories.

We took out an ageing broken valve oscilloscope in the boot of the MDs
car and returned with £3000 of HP scope plus spectrum analyser, from
Germany. Coming back they asked if we had anything to declare. I
admitted that I had bought 5kg of German sausage, and inquired if that
was over the legal limit. The customs officer told me to **** off and
waved us through.

On another occasion I had a carnet for my PC clone,. and driving first
to Germmany via france and Belgium acquired a hugely impressive set of
stamps on the carnet. Next stop Copenhagem via Jutland. Duly got a stamp
at the Danish border.

Then back home via Ejsberg and a ferry to Harwich.

I never recrossed the same border on that trip.

But it was the Danish customs on the German border that wrote to me
asking why I had not re-exported the PC. At least I think thats what he
wanted to know. I faxed him the Ejseberg exit stamp and never heard from
him again.

1. WHAT IS AN ATA CARNET AND WHY MIGHT I NEED ONE?
The Carnet is a temporary export document that is used primarily for
goods being temporarily exported for display at trade fairs or
exhibitions, and for professional equipment and samples. Carnet
eliminates the need for a Customs declaration at border points and the
deposit of a guarantee, bond, or cash deposit in the country of
temporary importation. It can be used for a trip covering more than one
country and include numerous exits and re-entries in the country of
origin during the period of validity of the document (i.e. one year).
Temporary admission under cover of ATA carnets applies to goods, which
will be re-exported in the same state in which they were imported
(*processing, repairs or modification of any items is not allowed*).

Oh ****.

When I was faced with replacing most of my CD collection after a
burglary, it would have been cheaper to fly to Boston and buy them all
as I did, even if I had had to pay for the airfare, which I didn't.

Ther are some desperaly cheap last minute flights across the pond.

A lad I used to know made his living filming machines for training
videos. Whilst working in Alaska (he lived in the uk) his camera broke
down the only people to fix it were in California. As he needed a quick
repair he flew to the repairers in Huntington California for a pre
booked repair. The repair took four hours during which time he went off
to explore Huntingdon beach in the only clothes he had packed for his
trip to arctic Alaska! Needless to say he felt somewhat conspicuous and
out of place on what must be the beach that inspired Baywatch!
