Default [OT] Where to get a balanced and varied source of news in the UK?

I'm getting right ****ed off with the media (and have been for some
time). It's mostly biased sensationalist tripe where the headline is a
far far offbeat interpretation of even the words contained within story
below, let alone other versions of the same story.

If I wanted to read patronising biased ****e, I'd buy the Sun.

Just in the process of dumping my subscription to The Times as Murdoch
has reduced even that to sensationalism.

The Indy seems not my better, which was a disappointment.

I'm suspecting a news aggregator of stories from a wider variety of
sources, including non UK, but in English, is the way to go.

But I'm not sure where to start - any suggestions?

The Financial Times is surprisingly good.
If you tweak for your particular preferences on Google news, that can
also be useful.

In the UK is a little difficult.

Of the UK is easier, I use the Irish Times

Good luck. If you find one, let me know.

There was a time when the better papers reported the news. Comment on it
could be ignored or not. They all seem to combine the two now.

As has been observed, it seems that the democratising of news via biased
facebook and other media has in fact sounded the death knell to independent
reporting.
Everyone has a smart phone and the lazy folk in the media use the footage
no matter how one sided that may be.
Sadly since nobody wants to pay for news any more then nobody will employ a
reporter to go out and be shot at to collect it.

Its the same with all newspapers. They are not news. They are carefully
tailored opinions matched to the bigotry of a particular target market
that they nurture and intensify, whilst selling crap product to them.

Once you realise that it is occasionally possible to distil one percent
of actual fact from them.

E.g. I do believe there has been an earthquake in New Zealand, and
people have died. That all I know. The rest of the column inches are
garbage.

Once you realise that newspapers are there to sell advertisers product
to a given market sector by pandering to their bigotry, the nature of
their content becomes clear.

This is just as true of e.g. BBC and sky news.

Except the BBC is selling something slightly diffferent - a political
perspective.

AdBlock Plus or uBlock and Ghostery will sort those, plus much more.

Yes, the Telegraph's own clickbait is irritating. The owners, the
Barclay brothers, are desperately trying to offload the business. The
way it's going, there won't be any business left to sell.

Telegraph has had it.

What little quality is left is now behind a 'premium' paywall, but its
not worth reading that much.

If adverstisers cant support it, customers wont.

Ta.

I'm a bit old skool. Fire up a batch file on the PC that opens about 40
websites in tabs on Firefox while I make coffee in the morning. Mixture
of news, tech news, cartoons, fun, etc. I've added RT and Reuters now.

If I tried to open 40 tabs with the speeds I get here the system would
collapse!

Is the Register one of the tabs? I used to be an avid reader of BOFH but
now only read it occassionally.

That's in addition to the 30 or so tabs I have open already.

2 second delay between each url to give it time to catch its breath.
And 40Mbps fibre.

Firefox is the only browser that can cope. Chrome goes bananas and
eventually locks the machine up. IE... well, it's IE. It's good for
spreading viruses and malware and not much else.

Is the Register one of the tabs?

I don’t even bother with the TV news at all anymore either,
its much more convenient to read the news online now and

Nothing to do with lazy, everything to do with what people want to see.

Sadly since nobody wants to pay for news any more then nobody will employ

Plenty go there themselves and send the
news back to the places that want to use it.

We've just had one of our TV news operations get
the first major interview with Trump after his win.
And that operation employs a muslim too.

If you have 20 minutes to spare John Oliver does quite a good analysis
of what is happening to journalism (despite being a Devout leftie, ex of
"The Daily Show") in general as a result of demise of investigative
print journalists, and the rise of "digital journalism".

Although it is a you tube link it is just a man talking to camera so can
be listened to as easily as watched.

Everyone has a smart phone and the lazy folk in the media use the footage
no matter how one sided that may be.
Sadly since nobody wants to pay for news any more then nobody will employ a
reporter to go out and be shot at to collect it.

Default [OT] Where to get a balanced and varied source of news in the UK?

I'm getting right ****ed off with the media (and have been for some

If I wanted to read patronising biased ****e, I'd buy the Sun.

Just in the process of dumping my subscription to The Times as Murdoch
has reduced even that to sensationalism.

The Indy seems not my better, which was a disappointment.

I'm suspecting a news aggregator of stories from a wider variety of
sources, including non UK, but in English, is the way to go.

But I'm not sure where to start - any suggestions?

Guardian, Al Jazeera, Private Eye and FT (I get a work paid sub). If I
want evidence to back up my bias, I subscribe to notifications from peer
reviewed journals - Elsevier has a decent range of open access titles.

For me , though, hard copy is always best - although I only get the 'Eye
regularly.

But obviously they all have an axe to grind. Just so long as it's my axe :-)

I agree with you about hard copy.

To say nothing of the slow pages and video delays I get on the
Telegraph site. Yes, my PC is a bit old but those pages shouldn't
be as overloaded as they are.

It's all the ads, spyware and trackers they load in the background. I
use Ghostery, a browser plugin that disables trackers and often it'll
block up to 26 trackers on Torygraph pages.
