That's how the best of the bookies win at gambling. |

The only way to win in gambling is to buy shares in Ladbrokes No, as I explained, you merely have to be smarter than the average punter. The bookies of course always win, because the odds are calculated so they do. But so too do some people win, you just need to understand the game and win slightly more often than lose. Of course if its a pure lottery or a roulette wheel, you will never win. Roulette has been beaten a number of times... The first notable occasion being in Monte Carlo in the late 1800's when an engineer hired a team of clerks to watch the wheels for several weeks and record all the results. He then did a statistical analysis of them and found the natural bias on some of the wheels, and was able to clean up by betting on the slightly more likely set of numbers. ISTR there was also a challenge (with a prise offering) that had been issued by the casino that no one could break the bank at roulette - so they had to pay him the prise for that as well. (although the rules dictated he had to explain how he did it - so from then on, they made sure they swapped about the wheels each night to stop anyone else using the same attack) There was another successful attack put together by a group of physics students in the late 70's and early 80's in the US. They designed a wearable embedded computer system that could predict the likely landing zone of the ball on the rotor, based on the kind of calcs that one uses for working out how orbits of satellites decay. They took advantage of the fact that you can bet late after the wheel has already been spun. So they had enough time for an observer to "click in" the rotation times of the wheel and the ball, such that the system could estimate the speed of the wheel and ball, and predict how the balls orbit would decay. -- Cheers, John. /================================================== ===============\ | Internode Ltd - http://www.internode.co.uk | |-----------------------------------------------------------------| | John Rumm - john(at)internode(dot)co(dot)uk | \================================================= ================/ |
