anyone installed an electrical drive gate opener system? Kit form
or otherwise.

Any experiences good or bad appreciated

A neighbour of mine with a long driveway had one driven entirely off solar power/batteries etc.
Dunno about the cost.
Probably got it back on not having to install a long wire!

The other thing to consider is:- Is it for convenience or security?
They are quite different technologies/installations.

Probably got it back on not having to install a long wire!


Almost certainly easier to use a PoE injector and 12V PSU to charge a
battery using 100+m of cat5. Then you can use a mains inverter to power
a bog standard gate opener.

There have been a couple of cases of electric gates cushing toddlers
(when opening, I think). Make sure you read up on designing the layout
safely so there's nowhere where a child can get crushed in the
mechanism or between any part of a moving gate and solid object.

I recall that the rules now say (within the last few years) that you
are effectively a manufacturer if you build an electric gate (for money
I guess) and that you have to 'CE' mark it. Which of course means you
must be competent to say it meets all the applicable standards.
