Is there a way to permanently remove a twist from a 9" x 1" pine plank? It's a nice planed piece, but one end is about 10 degrees out-of-true to the other end. If I was using it as a floorboard, it wouldn't be a problem, because the act of screwing it down would flatten it, but I want to use it as a shelf that's not fixed in place.
TIA, A |

It's just a **** bit of wood. Probably not correctly cut from the log it was made from. |

Probably involves a jointer and turning it into a 8½" x ¾" plank ... 9" x 1" is pushing it for a softwood board to be perfectly flat. Splitting it in two, re machining the edges and glueing up might work if you don't have access to a planer. A timber merchant might do it if they're sure there are no hidden fixings |

The twist might be useful if you were making a Viking longship :-)

I don't think you can do this. If it has a natural warp, then even if
steamed straight it will gradually go back. Brian -- ----- - This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... The Sofa of Brian Gaff... Blind user, so no pictures please! wrote in message ... TIA, A No. First it's not doable. Second if it were somehow done, you'd have a plank with twist dependant on RH, so it would retwist as the seasons change. NT |

Frankly its not worth trying unless its a very nice bit of pine. but steam or heat will do it it -- €œit should be clear by now to everyone that activist environmentalism (or environmental activism) is becoming a general ideology about humans, about their freedom, about the relationship between the individual and the state, and about the manipulation of people under the guise of a 'noble' idea. It is not an honest pursuit of 'sustainable development,' a matter of elementary environmental protection, or a search for rational mechanisms designed to achieve a healthy environment. Yet things do occur that make you shake your head and remind yourself that you live neither in Joseph Stalins Communist era, nor in the Orwellian utopia of 1984.€ Vaclav Klaus |

Maybe the OP should look out for a similarly twisted bit and make a deeper shelf by playing them off against each other :-) -- Jim K ----Android NewsGroup Reader---- http://usenet.sinaapp.com/ |
