OT - tax disc holder
 

My last road fund licence disc expired on 30th September, so there was
no point in my keeping the tax disc holder in the windscreen after that.
However, although they are no longer required, I see more cars with tax
discs on than without. OOI, are there any here who have removed the tax
disk holder from their vehicles, even though the tax has not yet expired?

I haven't.

I'm probably going to keep a bit of paper in there to remind me when I
have to renew mine (and insurance as it is the same month).

Might even print a "fake" disc for fun :)

But I intend to keep my last disc as a momento...

I took my tax disc holder out of my car, as I didn't see the point of
having an empty one.

No. Not yet, might get around to it if I think about it at the right
moment.

Actually one is displaying a current tax disc (expires Jan 15) and the
other has an expired tax disc (expired Aug 14) The tax disc for the
latter car never made it into the car it seems :-)

My road tax expired in June and I renwed it late and lost the paper disc
so it's still showing expired in June.

I applied for the tax disk for Hil's mobility cart (required because it
is capable of 8mph) about six months ago. The tax disc came last week,
so I bought a tax disk holder for it yesterday, out of mad. I wonder if
that was the last one sold?

It's not worth the bother of me removing it - I'll wait until the next
windscreen replacement!

In over 50 years of motoring, I've had access about 10 cars plus vans and
each ne has needed a screen replacement at sometime or other for reasons
from a bloody great stone thrown out of the twin rear wheels of a lorry,
heat expansion and kids throwing snowballs containing stones off two
bridges. To be fair though, I used to do a high mileage annual mileage which
has now dropped to about 14000 a year.

In much of London at least there's an ever increasing need to display
proof of payment of the council tax supplement (usually a round bit of
paper labelled "resident's parking permit"). And few people adopt my
DIY approach of "whatever tape happens to be at hand" (which I may
change now I can retiure the tax disc).

I haven't displayed the tax disk on my motorbike for at least ten
years and probably quite a bit longer than that. It has never caused
any issues with the police.

Our car still has its tax disk displayed though.

About 20 years ago, I got a letter from DVLA telling me someone had
cloned my car's identity, and warning it might be in preparation for
another crime. I never heard anymore about it, and the person didn't
seem to rack up any parking or speeding fines. I did keep the letter
though, in case I did get any letters from car park operators or the
like.

There have been ANPR cameras on all the major traffic lights around
here for last couple of years.

They have enough to do that.
If they are stupid they get a parking fine and then the dvla knows about
the duplicate and it can be flagged within a few weeks.

This no disc seems a strange way to proceed. If as we are all told, there
are many untaxed and uninsured people on the roads, a member of the public
could easily look at a vehicle and tell the authorities if it was expired.
Now however how would anyone know?

I bought one as a joke present for SWMBO last year, which she is now
threatening to use now she doesn't have to trap the paper licence in it.
It's only plastic, and round the rim is printed "Yes I have paid my Tax.
Now go fix some f****** potholes". I noticed they're still for sale on

The Police can interrogate the ANPR database. MY SIL does frequently in
order to track down scroats who don't appear in court. It enables him
to track journey patterns and times, so they just wait in the right place.

In Kent in 2010, the ANPR system 'read' over 220,000,000 plates and
'hit' on 560,000 that weren't taxed or insured.

Drugs/serious crime/immigration squads etc can have a particular plate
flagged so they get a report every time it is 'read'.

Depends on how the plates are being used. Around here pikeys steal
number plates to steal fuel from self-serve garages. They take them off
immediately after they've been used.
