Just another web layer on top of usenet.

Think of it as either a service to users without news server access, or
a bunch of chancers looking for oodles for free content to drive
searchers toward their ads (assuming they have some - can't tell running
adblock!)

You want to see the commercial sites out that that have lifted content
from our wiki and posted it complete with pictures and then slapped
their copyright on top!

Any mileage in a 'uk.d-i-y' "watermark" at least on jpgs?

would the wider populace know what to do with it even if curious?

Some of the ones pilfered already had a visible copyright in the image -
that was left in on the infringing site!

e.g try this bunch of chancers:

Well crossposting to up to three groups is quite common on Usenet, if this
happens after the start of a thread then the origninal post is only
preserved in quotes.

Yes indeed. I was involved in a thread on a group about web creation using
flash and how to make it accessible. Part of my post was reposted as a quote
on a web site out of context which effectively got me into trouble with a
lady whose husband was a web developer and she refused to ever talk to me
again, even though, if she had read the original, it would not have caused
any problems. so not only do people nick stuff, but some people, like
relatives of those in the know, who don't know, shall we say, their web site
from their arses, get others into trouble as well. One just develops an
asbestos skin in the end.

No matter how idiot proff a thing is another better idiot comes along to
screw you up.

If you think that anything you post on the public internet is secure, then
you are expecting far too much.
Post it in public and public will take it.

I wrote a large article for UK Selfbuid .. and found it recreated word for
word on a Plumbing companies web site as their guide ... it happens.

Who holds the copywrite on those images? Someone here created them I presume?

Assuming they've not been released as available to use, maybe the copywrite
holder could drop them an email complaining... be interesting to hear their
response.

The images on that particular page were collected from various sources -
none were originated by us as far as I am aware... Some of the others
that have been pinched have been ones one of us drew or photographed
though.

I did send an email to the lot above suggesting that a attribution would
be in order, but did not get any form of reply.

Barstewards but it happens. I quite like it when they don't copy any
images just link back to the orginal ones that msyteriously get
changed...

If you run the webserver it's possible to configure things so that
only the referring leech site gets the changed image, so you don't
need to change yoursite.

It's a ****ing cheek. I remember one day coming across some of my
essays which I'd put out for free as an act of selflessness to try to

My Youtube films used to draw several comments a day to my email inbox

looking into it, some swine had somehow swiped my films over to his YT

then went to HIM instead.
I suppose we shouldn't be too surprised. Anything that isn't nailed

Suppose once its out there online then anyone can easily copy it.

Can't you "watermark" the items published?..

Indeed it was - and I missed that on the copied page, since it has since
been moved to the house wiring article on our site.

For the avoidance of doubt, they have also copied lots of other pages
and diagrams / pictures etc.

Given our wiki is published under GNU free documentation license:

http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php?...iki:Copyrights

thence:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html

Its fair game for people to reuse the content, however they should
ensure that the original authors get recognition for their work as well.

Really cannot be bothered. The stolen items didn't represent enough of
an investment in time and effort on my part to worry about pursuing.
Now if I'd written a 100,000 word novel which had been widely
acclaimed and had fortune-making potential, that'd be different!
