Default Interesting: Greenland glacier sets new speed record

Gives new meaning to the term 'glacial'.

The Jakobshavn glacier in Greenland is retreating at a speed of 2 meters
_per hour_ according to a study:

http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/...-sets-glacial-
speed-record/

FWIW: I'm not persuaded either way about global warming; keeping an open
mind.

Actually I do believe there is global warming. But I do not think it is
due to the reasons politicians think it is. The world temperature has
never been stable and changes frequently, and not only over 1000s of years.

Greenland caves in to drilling,

shrugging off oil spill dangers
Jan 06, 2014

Greenland has decided to open up one of the most fragile Arctic
environments to oil drilling, brushing aside environmental concerns.
BP, the company responsible for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,
has won permission to drill in eastern Greenland.

The Anglo-American energy giant, held responsible for turning the Gulf
of Mexico into an ecological catastrophe in 2010, has been given

exploration rights in eastern Greenland - an area of 2,630 square
kilometers and the world's biggest island.

"Northeast Greenland is a long-term play, and we expect several years
of careful planning before exploring this challenging and interesting
region,"

BP said in a statement. "We look forward to working with the BMP
[Greenland's Bureau of Mines and Petroleum] and partners to develop
a 2D seismic work programme."

The Greenland government's decision is a complete U-turn from what
it said only nine months ago, when a moratorium on any further drilling

was imposed due to environmental concerns. "The latest move is understood
to be tightly connected to Greenland's striving for independence

from Denmark," RT's Aleksey Yaroshevsky said.

Russia's state-owned oil firm Rosneft is to build two shipyard facilities
to construct vessels and platforms for its push to exploit Russia's
Arctic regions, according to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin.

On 29 August 2011 Exxon Mobil signed an Arctic oil exploration deal
with Rosneft in the presence of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Proving that the Cold War is well and truly dead,
at least for multinationals, Putin gushed, "New horizons are opening up.

One of the world's leading companies, Exxon Mobil, is starting to work
on Russia's strategic shelf and deepwater continental shelf.

The potential oil fields are some of the largest in circumpolar Arctic
offshore area." The contract stipulates that Exxon Mobil and Rosneft
will jointly spend $3.2 billion on deepwater exploration in the
Russian Federation's East Prinovozemelskii region of the Kara Sea.

U.S. Winter Storm Seen Spreading Snow, Sleet Across South

Feb 10, 2014Georgia's governor declared a state of emergency
for 45 counties and Atlanta canceled classes for tomorrow and
the next day as a winter storm neared, less than two weeks after
a system stranded thousands of people in cars, buses and schools.

The region may get 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 centimeters) of snow
and ice over the next three days as the storm moves from Texas to
the Atlantic Ocean, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Sleet and snow will begin falling late today or early tomorrow,
the agency said.

Not that it was, of course.

No but you wouldn't expect the Americans to blame one of their own would
you?
