Default Sending texts from a PC

My mobile phone reception is pretty much zero at home and I often need to
send texts.

I'm looking for website or an app from which I can send SMS texts to mobile
phones.
I have done this some years ago so I know it's possible.

Any pointers?

Some of the mobile operators have such a facility for their customers
right on their websites - e.g. Vodafone.

Can be done via Skype (payment required).

Some mobile phone software can do it depending on make/model of phone -
and some third party software has the facility.

Have you tried using an extension aerial up high and connecetd to the phone? perhaps modern phones do not have facility for this.

Skype is about 5.6p per text to UK numbers (even from overseas). We use
WhatsApp to those that have it on their mobiles

There was a report on our local TV a year or so ago about a guy who had
similar problems and he rigged a rope and pulley high up in a tree and
winched his phone up there to send and receive texts.

It was certainly a good bit of d-i-y :-)

It's not free, and I don't know whether any other suppliers offer
anything similar:-

http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobi...ne-sure-signal

It's a femtocell that uses part of your wired broadband bandwidth to
give you a guaranteed signal on any mobile you register.

There is an option on the Orange website to do this.

The Munch SMS app lets you send text via wifi from the iPod touch or other
iDevices if you have one. There's SMS sheep that lets you send free SMS
from a web browser. But my nasty side says that looks a good way to harvest
phone numbers for later spam.

There are paid for services such as kapow.co.uk that offer web and email to
SMS gateways.

I use voipcheap.co.uk for calls and SMS, 4.5p per text, but if you
just want it for UK SMS then I would recommend one of their sister
companies smartvoip.com. That costs 3.2p per text.
It's on a pre-pay basis, and you can download their softphone to send
SMS and make calls.

A not very well documented feature is that you can send predefined
texts my constructing a URL like this.
https://www.smartvoip.com/myaccount/...4&text=H ello.
This is a test SMS from Graham.

Hi Mark,
Voip can be your faithful friend.
There's a "parent" company called Betamax that has an ever changing base
of re-branded services. They use the "bait and switch" marketing method
but You can do the same.
I've been using them for domestic and business outgoing calls for many
years. If your mobile data plan allows it then their voip app is
awesome. Anyway.... back to your question, you can use their service
for sending text messages from your account via PC prog.
http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/sms_rates#letter-U
is the one I'm currently using. You can register multiple numbers to use
for accurate caller I.D. too though sometimes your call might show up as
"international" depending on routing of the call.
http://backsla.sh/betamax
For call costs of the various offerings.

https://www.fishtext.com/

I use it all the time. 2p a text, cheaper to non-British numbers.
just top up by text message.

I'll second that, I've been using them for years and it works well at a good price

Vodafone 3G phones at that (doesn't work with Vodafone MVNOs like Asda either). mine works OK most of the time but falls over if I'm maxxing out my upload bandwidth sending stuff to Skydrive or wherever.

Your mobile phone service provider will give you (for example) 600
free webtexts per month. Just log into their website and find it on
your account.

Pretty sure the o2 website allows you to send (or at least it used
too) and did n't require you to have an o2 phone (Though you have to
set up an account).

Do any of the previously mentioned methods allow for 2 way texting?
(ie. if someone texts back, it can be forwarded to email perhaps).

Yes, it's reduced my recharging rate from every 24 hours, to every 72 hours.

The one that Rob Miller mentioned seems to.

http://www.cbfsms.com/

Free as well.

I am a little worried about the T&C, many threats to speculatively
invoice you if they think you have breached any of them.

Only if sending to another ithing, and if the ithing has a unique Apple
user ID. It can only send to other phones via SMS if available.
