Default A question of efficiency WRT Central heating operation

As the weather has been up and down lately I've been "tweaking"
(perpetually fiddling) with the boiler and got to wondering...

The boiler is weather compensated (modulates the flow temp based on ext.
temperature) which is brilliant however, it runs on a flexible scale
variable between 2 points. Which makes for very flexible temperature
curve modifications.

So, after some experimentation I have the flow maintaining room
temperature fractionally under the t/stats switch point. (set at 20.5)

The puzzle is, would it be more efficient to have the flow temp a little
higher and allow room stats to switch things off completely or to have
flow set at maintaining optimal temp. In doing the former the rooms
usually continue to warm beyond set temp once t/stat is closed due to
residual heat in floor whereas in the latter the boiler cuts in now and
again but circulating pump(s) run continuously as t/stats are always
calling for heat.

So hotter and faster or cooler and slower?

:¬)
