How long does food keep in cans?
"D.M. Procida" wrote in message ... An elderly neighbour has kindly given us a couple of cans. One contains 4 Goblin "Hamburgers With Onions and Gravy", with a 49p price sticker still on it. I used to find it amusing that Aramy rations have no manufactured or sell by date on any of the 24 Hr ration packs. There was chocolate bars that when you opened has a white coating all over the bar ... same with packets of Rolos .... and surpringlky for UK army ration packs, much of the detail was in Arabic ... sell by date was always blank. |

White bloom on chocolate is usually a sign of it having been put in a refrigerator. -- djc |

A few years ago the Horizon programme features a tin of bully beef that was 103 years old. After exhaustive tests on the can and then then contents the Professor in charge of the project tasted it. His comment was that the flavour was excellent and he suffered no ill effects. Dates on tins are a soporific to the nanny state brigade. If the tins are in good condition, especially the inside then the contents will ok. -- John Bryan |

There were also the famous Iranian Mars bars. Arrsepedia; "Originally produced as part of a contract for the Shah of Iran in the late 1970s, these Mars Bars were never delivered and, instead, made their way into Compo 24 hour packs where they were to be found well into the early 90s, by which time they had developed an outer layer of fine white powder. In 1988, one of these Mars Bars was fed to chickenpunk's dog by a Royal Marine Captain in HQ 1 Bde in Tidworth, causing it to fart so virulently that the entire G2 office had to be temporarily evacuated. Seen and eaten mid-late 90s, complete with white dusting" 40 year old tinned cake was edible, allegedly. http://www.mreinfo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3162 On Nov 3, 10:55*pm, Tim Streater wrote: Tins used to be soldered dint they (perhaps they still are). Did that solder include lead and did that matter? -- Tim Not for a very long time. Franklin's 1845 lost expedition to discover the North Wets passage took soldered tinned provisions, which may have been a cause of the deaths of the crews. Exhumed bodies had very high levels of lead. |
