Creocote and UV protection
Does anyone know how well "Creocote" protects wood from UV degradation?
I've made a pair of external gates using T&G, and 4x2. I have treated every piece of timber with "Creocote" (oil-based creosote substitute) prior to assembly. I dare say this will inhibit rot, but I've since read that sunlight, primarily through the action of ultraviolet light, degrades wood through the creation of free radicals which then degrade the wood polymers. We've all seen wood that has turned grey and shrunken after prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight. Perhaps I should paint the gates as soon as the Crecote is thoroughly dry. If so, what paint would be most suitable? TIA Jaked D |
