Vista - hibernate?
As you guys seem to know more about PC's, than those in the specialist
ng's.... New Vista laptop, which I have set to hibernate when the power button is pressed, which works fine apart from that there is no feedback as it hibernates. Press the button and the screen goes blank. Is there any way to make it show on the screen the progress of hibernation, as in XP by default? -- Regards, Harry (M1BYT) (L) http://www.ukradioamateur.co.uk |

Sure it's not set it to suspend (to RAM) rather than hibernate (to disk)? Yeah, on my laptop (Toshiba Equium) running Vista, sleep, suspend and hibernate all look very similar. Sleep leaves a flashing telltale, where as hibernate (predicatably) flashes the disk access light for about 10-15 seconds then shuts down. You need to watch the disc access lights, or have desktop icons for what you need, rather than using Vista shutdown. There's a few powertools [1] out there that will install the desktop icons for you. Cheers, Paul. [1] DIY reference ! |

Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it works like a hard reset with disk checks and all the crap that goes with that. Best to avoid it if possible. |

To answer the earlier question first - yes I'm sure it is hibernating, it takes it much longer than going into (the as it was setup to do) standby and it shows resuming when started back up. It is not my system, but I always set them to hibernate because standby will flaten a laptops battery. The hibernate does seem to work without any problems at all so far, except for the fact that it gives not much in the way of clues when going into hibernation - the screen just goes blank instantly. In XP i've just come across a very useful utility that tells you what your default sleep states are. I don't know if it's Vista compatable or not, but the description is here .. http://windowsitpro.com/article/arti...eep-state.html Cheers, Paul. |
