Hi
I was standing on my drive looking at the poor state of the paint on my metal up'n'over garage door, when a nice man from Everest (we fit the best) walked up. About an hour later he had reduced his quote of £4,700 down to a reasonable (according to him), £2,500. So, not having wads of cash bursting their way out of my back pocket, what's the best way to remove the paint from said door and start again? Paint stripper, heat gun, sand paper (I do have an angle grinder ![]() Any suggestions appreciated. |

BTW, if the door is around 7' x 7' - ish, you can get a brand new insulated, remote control operated and insulated roller door for less than £500 - assuming you are willing to self install. -- Regards, Harry (M1BYT) (L) http://www.ukradioamateur.co.uk |

You can get an entire concrete garage with new door, installed on a new base for less than that! |

I bought one from an Ebay seller based at S****horpe, but there are others selling similar. I ordered it to size, collected it and installed it. Came with 2x wireless remotes and a manual handle, to which I added a wired control and later a IR detector to stop the door closing onto anything/anyone which might be in the way. -- Regards, Harry (M1BYT) (L) http://www.ukradioamateur.co.uk |

I was standing on my drive looking at the poor state of the paint on
my metal up'n'over garage door, when a nice man from Everest (we fit the best) walked up. You had better luck than me - You got a quote ;-) Had already looked at replacing our up'n'over and been quoted about 450- 500 including new frame etc etc. Didn't bother in the end. Anyhoo ... One day bloke from some double glazing company stolls up and asks if I want a quote on a new garage door. OK sez I. "Can I have you name, land line phone number ..." Er, no. I just want a quote. "It'll have to measured". OK, I'll hold one end the tape and you write down the number at your end .... "Oh, I'm just collecting leads for my manager, he'll give you a quote". Why don't you measure the door and phone him and ask for a quote? "What time would be convenient for him to see yourself and your wife for a quote?" No need for the wife, just a tape measure will do. "Can I say 5pm?" Can you give me a quote? "So, you will both be available at 5pm?" No. Can you just get out a tape measure, look it up on your little sheet and give me a quote here and now? "I can't give you a quote. My manager has to speak to yourself and your wife" At this point I grabbed the little card he was scribbling on, ripped it into 1000's of tiny peices and threw them at him. He left. Poor sod - Being a Monkey for a double glazing firm is had work - 35 quid for a lead ... They don't last long. Oh well. If I'd got a quote for less than 450 quid I'd have had it done. Sadly, they suckered the neighbours into a full window refit. I dread to think what they paid. The plain glass in their bathroom window was replaced after a while, but not until after we'd all had a good laugh ... ;-) Al. |

He never asked to see the wife, but his sales pitch was just perfect - apart from closing the deal. So many discounts, even a discretionary manager's discount. I still can't work out if anything he told me was true. Right down to the picture of his kid on his laptop. |

Farm auction, 5 quid 8-) Otherwise hunt around on the interwebs and compare prices, also factoring in your delivery costs. If you're near a city and you have an estate car, you might save something that way. Personally I'd also want galv steel laths. not aluminium. Fibreglass is no bloody use at all, as the local chavvery can stick their heads straight through it. |

I was pleased to see he was home as evidenced by his expensive shiny car half in/half out of the garage. I knocked on the front door by his garage door - no reply. I saw a bell push a little more to the side than you would expect and rang the bell push. His automatic garage door started to slowly close towards his car - oh ********. I can't remember exactly what I did to stop the door scratching his car but it worked, I seem to remember putting my coat then tool case on his bonnet. He came sauntering out from the back garden and explained he had added the bell push for convenience and it only closed and, did not open, his garage door. No damage done but I sweated a bit. |

I want one that is just an open pit straight down.
I want one that looks like the drive goes straight through to the back garden.
