If I didn't have a family I'd be looking at it but no doubt they want
people with bits of paper which I don't have.

This bit gets me "Hours can be long, especially if a ship comes in, when
you could be spending 12 hours unloading cargo." A 12 hour working day is
not unusual for me, 10 very common, if I do a mere eight I feels really
odd as it's lunch time but I'm going home...

Job not paying enough is the problem. £22K is having a Giraffe.

Sorry, I don't see the connection!

It's the fact that there sod all to do with whatever spare time that you
get, whilst you are there, that makes the 18 months so difficult.

My husband has just lost his job and applied for this but was turned down
because he was too old . They want a youngster but wont say it!
So unless you are twenty odd, its none starter. Also please note, whilst in
London Plumbers might earn a fortune, down here, 22K is good pay for a
plumber. Average wage is between 14 - 17K. and there are no jobs for
plumbers. No we cant afford to move either! he could go and take a job in
the Antarctic though.

I guess thats the price you pay for living in such a lovely place. Shame
really.

Kent can be a nightmare sometimes with the traffic, but being so near London
wage rates are quite high.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "endymion"
saying something like:

My husband has just lost his job and applied for this but was turned down
because he was too old . They want a youngster but wont say it!
So unless you are twenty odd, its none starter.

Not surprising - circulatory problems, unnoticed in older folks in this
climate, would begin to show up badly down there. The medical would
screen a helluva lot out, but why even bother wasting their time.

And if they weren't you could open a Chicken Cottage franchise with very

They aren't allowed to say it. All that happens now if you apply for a job and
they think you're too old is they simply ignore your application. That's merely
incredibly rude rather than illegal.

And a terrible waste of time for all the applicants who aren't even
going to be considered, all the more so when outfits like the
Jobcentre insist they keep on making applications for jobs.

I have this vision of a company being prosecuted for an advert like

"Airline plot required: Must have experience and a current pilots
license. Wheelchair users will not be considered"

Sadly age, sex, ability, matrimonial status, disability, intelligence,
ability to speak read and write English, and actual quality of
applicant, are, despite equal opportunity legislation, all something
that affects working performance.

Employers have to pretend it doesn't, and invent other reasons for
selection.

I suspect Spouse and you wouldn't have enjoyed working on Bird Island
when I was there in the 60's. Mum, Dad, and I (babe-in-arms) lived
there in a 6'x8' garden shed for (I think) six weeks. He was doing
biological research, she was acting as his research assistant, and I
was along for the ride. Mind you, there was less call for a plumber
then:
1. Running water? It's in the stream flowing out of the glacier.
2. Hot water? Kettle's in the corner.
3. Bath? see answer to first question :-).

I think the facilities are a bit more flash these days.
