Default Cost of Papering/Painting One Wall

I know this is DIY but I'm sure some of you will be able to give an
opinion .I have a wall that has been gyproc'd and emulsioned .but the
finish simply isn't right compared to the other walls and the ceiling
and when I did it I could not get it to a satisfactory finish and I
want a decorator to line it and then emulsion it . It is 2.3m x 4.3m
with no awkward shapes . There is a rad in the middle but presumably
that can stay .I have been quoted £330 in total with all paper and
paint provided by the contractor .Work to be done over 2 days ...

I'm in Glasgow..Does that sound reasonable?

I would consider this a very expensive wall - equivalent to about
£1300-00p for the whole room. You don't say how much preparation is
required but probably not much. Materials would be about 3 rolls of
lining paper and about 2.5 litres of paint. That should be less than
£20-00p for materials. You can get some idea of prices from:
www.wickes.co.uk or from local shops.

The wall requires about 9 lengths at 2.3m (7'6") of lining paper and a
competent decorator would easily manage that in an hour or so. Similarly
with the painting - about an hour for each of two coats. Obviously there
are overheads such as travel etc. but the actual job is about 3 hours
over two days to allow for drying times. A generous allowance would be
two half days. You shouldn't be paying him to watch paper dry. I would
suggest getting other quotes.

it seeing it's paper on to painted Gyproc and if the paper needed to
come off that might knacker the backing paper on the board

Think what you could do with the £310-00 you will save!

Seriously, it isn't a major operation if you take time and care and
that's what makes DIY so rewarding.

==================================
Sorry about the time-lag but I usually switch off about 10 p.m.

I certainly wouldn't consider using lining paper at about £13-00p a roll.
I think the heavier grades of standard type of paper are less prone to
rip whilst being wet handled so I would suggest a fairly heavy grade
which will also cover any slight imperfections in the wall surface. It
will also take the paint better without any tendency to bubble from the
wetting of the paint.

If you're buying from a specialist decorating shop you might get some
good advice on paper choice but I personally would just buy from Wickes,
or B&Q etc. because this is a job that's unlikely to go wrong.
