The parked car was close in to the kerb or road edge, and surely that is what one should expect. You, on the other hand, were waiting a little distance behind that parked car in a position with your offside close to the centre of the road. That also seems right, but still something went wrong and I think that it would have helped if your pupil had given a right signal at that time, thus discouraging those behind you from overtaking you.
