Just had my first try at setting up a digital Freeview box from an aerial. We
have a very old (20 years+) aerial in the loft so I just plugged that in the
hope it might work - and it (almost) did!. The FV box found 800+ stations (I
actually only want a few - the BBC/ITV group and History Channel (Fred is still
going strong there I see!). Problem is I cannot get the ITV group or most of the
radio stations as the signal shows up as too weak in the sig-strength bar.

I suppose it's a case of a new aerial, and if so can someone please advice me
what/where I can get a suitable one? (East Mids, Nottingham). I'd much prefer
the aerial goes in the loft rather than on the roof.

I have no idea. Why not try a sweet shop, or somewhere that sells
underwear?

FUs set.

And only charge about three times what a better aerial would cost

You're right, they're not the cheapest, but they do have the advantage
that you can walk into their store, and walk out with an aerial, rather
than mucking about waiting in all day for one of the on-line suppliers'
couriers to turn up.

Of course if you know of a cheaper or better retail outlet in
Nottingham, let us know, I presume you don't or else you'd have posted
its name ?

You might have to wait in but screwfix do aerials and deliver next day

They also have a trade counter in Derby, if you've got any other business in
that direction.

They are not that expensive especially if he goes for the one
they do for £12.99( not high gain) which will work OK in the loft,
especially if he is close to the Nottingham transmitter.

whether an aerial works in the loft, or not, is a function of what roofing
material is used and how much clutter of pips etc there is up there.

Some of the dttv channels are high (eg Mux B on ch 63 & Mux 2 on ch 67) and
could have serious difficulty in penetrating concrete tiles

I have sort of clay? tiles (not slate anyway) which are quite think and I
manage OK, I am about 4 miles away with a signal strength of 50dB
So he sould get soome sort of idea from that.
Yea the top two muxes are the hardest, I get 98% quality on 63
currently 64% on 67. (98% is 100% in reality on my box).
Now I have it positioned in a nice spot I very very rarely
experience any probs. I have another aerial I could add in parrallel
but its hardly worth the effort as any probs are very rare and brief
and may be due to some other factor beyond my control.
I might try it someday though, just out of interest though, as some
spots are better for different muxes and I could porbably get
98% all the time.

Maplin said they would take it back if it didn't work so I just tried the
cheapest aerial and I found it to be OK. No point in spending another
£30 or so.

I know you used to work for the BBC, Charles, so I guess you know things we
don't. I didn't realise that the pips accumulated in the loft. After all
these years of listening to the Radio Four news at 1pm our loft must be full
of the things.

Bill

PS: No, I'm not taking the pips . . .

I assumed, Charles was talking about, Pipistrelle bats, if you have enough
of them roosting in the loft they could attenuate the signal.

Young bats do not have a wingspan equal to half a wavelength, even on ch68.
It's only when they get older that the trouble starts. But don't get in a
flap about it.

The only palace you're allowed in is the Jade Palace, on Thursday
evenings, when Nursey gives you £4.50 from the Patients Bank to get
yourself a carry out.

Carry out what? I would carry out the crown from the palace.
