Acorn revived to launch laptop PCs

By Tony Smith
Published Friday 5th May 2006 09:32 GMT

That one-time pioneer of British home computing Acorn is to sprout
once again. The creator of the Atom, Electron, Archimedes and BBC
Micro machines, of the ARM chip company and of the RISC OS is to be
revived next week as a purveyor of notebook PCs.

The company's refusing to say anything about the motivation behind the
revival, or who's spearheading the move, until it's formally launched
on 10 May. It has said it will offer four notebooks: the 12.1in Solo
Note, 14.1in Solo Book, 15.4in Desk Note and 17in Desk Book, all
equipped with WXGA displays, run Windows XP and will bundle Sun's Star
Office.

Usually this simply means the badge is going to be reused by another
company in an attempt to gain an instant image and brand recognition.
Link came up blank tho.

It is a lie. There are a number of companies producing hardware based on the
development work that Acorn started. The one that has now purchased the name
"Acorn Computers Ltd" is not one of those companies.
If you want a new computer running RISC OS (the operating system that Acorn
produced) on and ARM processor (the computer that Acorn produced) then contact
CJE Micro's for an A9 computer from Advantage6 or other retailers for an
Iyonix from Castle Technology.
All that "Acorn Computers Ltd" (2006 version) is selling is Windows laptops.

Their PR company has yet to get back to me to explain what their link might be
to the real & original company (other than having purchased the name from
Companies House for 20 quid).

Acorn does live - but it's called:
RISC OS Ltd - developers of the RISC OS operating system
Advantage 6 - developer of the latest (very mini) desktop computer using
Acorn's RISC OS
Castle Technology - developer of the previous desktop computer running RISC OS
Virtual Acorn - version of RISC OS that runs on top of Windows.

Brilliant guess. But it isn't all bad news as long as you avoid the re-used
name - see other bit of thread.
