What sort of fireplace? The sort with a cast-iron door and
glass front made of vertical strips of glass? Twin doors
and single pieces of glass? You'd possibly enlarge your
scope for answers by x-psoting, e.g. to uk.d-i-y (done).

I had just got through talking to my child and telling her that you
cannot say England if you mean the entire UK, but then what would I do
with a site in Welsh?
What I want is a set of heatproof glass doors that I can close when I
go to bed at night and leave closed when the fireplace isn't being used
so my expensive heat doesn't go up the flue. There might be occasions
as well when I wanted a fire closed in, since it is next to the dining
table. My fireplace is +- 400 years old and has a wonderful iron
fireback showing a taverna scene. We use our fireplaces for cooking
here, too. I don't want to plug it up with a stove or insert plus I
already have a stove in that room for use when the central heating is
too much.
So, why does a UK newspaper recommend them if you cannot buy them?
Surely many people in the UK have ancient and beautiful fireplaces?

Yes, they do. But I've never seen one with the sort of doors that I
remember from Canadian fireplaces. Many of the fireplaces are not used,
or have been fitted with appliances that have integral doors. Perhaps
the person who wrote the article thought the doors were a good idea
(they are) and was suggesting people buy them online from US suppliers?
A quick Google found no suppliers of such things in the UK. I could ring
our local fireplace specialist tomorrow if you like.

sarah

As you appear to be a really thick trollop with narcissistic
tendencies, I will simply observe that I have been here for
ages; I also post in other newsgroups; I couldn't care less
what you do with yourself or your killfile - as long as you
do it where it isn't a Good Thing to post with content. If
you can persuade yourself that posting with content is OK,
I shall be pleased to see it. I have better things to do
than harass the likes of you. I am offended by stupidity.
Of course you won't see this (oh, no, of course not, unless
you are perhaps a "tad" narcissistic).

The parents' fireplace is quite wide, and doors would have been
impractical. Their solution was to have a sheet of metal installed in
the chimney across a bar, with hinges in the middle. There is a chain in
a corner and when you want to open you just release it and the weight of
the metal is sufficient to do it on its own.

My fireplace is +- 400 years old and has a wonderful iron
fireback showing a taverna scene.

Yes, these are expensive, but considering their meaning (that the house
is now inhabited) and that they last a few decades at least they're
quite a nice and necessary symbol.

We use our fireplaces for cooking here, too.

Yep. Done it during the holiday for duck breasts and black pudding - a
very nice feeling and a lovely taste. The fire starts burning for
breakfast (hmmmm) and doesn't stop until bedtime. It's just a matter of
planning your wood so you get the embers at the right moment.

I don't want to plug it up with a stove or insert

Argh! *BLASPHEMY!*

plus I already have a stove in that room for use when the central heating
is too much.
So, why does a UK newspaper recommend them if you cannot buy them?

Since when do you think newspapers sensible?

What sort of fireplace? The sort with a cast-iron door and
glass front made of vertical strips of glass? Twin doors
and single pieces of glass? You'd possibly enlarge your
scope for answers by x-psoting, e.g. to uk.d-i-y (done).

If Judith is in/from Umbria, I suspect she is referring to the large
glass sliding/vertical sliding counterweighted doors that are common in
Italy. I've not seen them onsale in the UK.

I hate the damn things anyway so I don't pay much attention to them.

Well, I humbly suggest that she drop into Bricopoint/Castorama and buys
the doors there where there is a wide range in stock. If she has a word
with her local ferramenta they will propose a huge number of alternatives.
