Default Makita 9.6 Stick Battery

Generally yes. One of the modern chargers will charge stick NiCd and
NiMH batteries (in fact will charge just about any Makita battery).

The older chargers designed for the NiCd stick designs as supplied with

things like the slightly odd "inverted L" shaped 9.6V drill driver, do
not have the required contacts required to do the NiMH versions.

Thanks, was guessing someone out there hopefully had both to check.
Stick batteries are od hat I guess now.

My 9.6v transformer has gone to Makita heaven/hence question, as I see
some stubby Makita 9.6v chargers on E Bay.
I also see a stick one rated @ 7.2V; would that be any good/just be
slower, or would it never fully charge a 9.6v battery.

Yes and no - Makita still use the same pinout they have used for years
so their stuff is reasonably interchangeable.

I have a friend with a 9.6V NiCd drill - his batts were getting tired
so bought some 9.6V NiMH stick ones (they do the same drill new with
NiMH as well). However his old charger would not hack it, but the one
for my 18V NiMH drill had no trouble with any of his 9.6V batts.

No the 7.2V one would not charge them at all.

If you go for one of the modern chargers (like one compatible with 14.4V
or 18V tools), then they will charge pretty much anything up to the
maximum voltage they do.
