Default mitutoyo squares

the other day i dropped my mitutoyo square and the threaded part that
snugs the blade to the square head broke(sheared off the part that fits
in the groove on the blade). anyway i googled exhaustively looking for
the part i need and it seems like i might have to buy a new square head
for about $45. is it possible to just buy the part i need? (i havent a
clue what that part would called)
thanks, cj

I got a small part for my digimatic calipers from Grainger, just give
them a call with the tool model number.

I don't have any idea where to buy the part but it seems like a good excuse
to make something. You might even get to buy a new tool or two to make it
with. :)

Goodness gracious ! Is that all that troubles you ?

Simply take a 1/4"-20 x 1-1/4" bolt, file a flat on the shank, half-way
through the bolt, and about 5/8" long, right against the head.

Then, shape the head to make a little hook that fits into the groove of the
ruler. It should be as deep and as broad a hook as will fit the square and
ruler when assembled, so as to not let go when the pressure is on. Try to
make it sharply square,. too.It also needs to be able to fit through the
square so you can assemble it. Then, any common 1/4-20 nut will accomodate
the other end of the bolt,

and VOILA ! You are back in business. (Or "viola", if your strings are tuned
THAT way.)
..
Mitutoyo equipment is tough, and unless you dropped it from the third-story
level, it probably didn't go "out of square", but that is easy enough to
check.

If it is anything like the common try square, you could probably file
one from a bolt.

--Chances are if you dropped it it ain't 'square' anymore so I'd get
a new one. The reason *I* got a Mitutoyo was because of its *extreme*
accuracy. Dollars to donuts all you've got now is a 'common' square. Get a
new one and take better care of it.
