Our robot took 1st place in Illinois state Robocross olympiad
Video and some details are here.
http://www.machinerymoverschicago.com/blog/Robocross/ Most people go the easy route and buy a "Vex Robotics" kit. We built our own and won. This robot works like a skid steer. The bucket, I made sharp as a knife and sharpened it to make it a straight and sharp blade, on a surface grinder. i |

Sorry, the purpose of a very sharp bucket edge is to pick up pennies and Lego bricks, that are hard to pick up otherwise. |

No, the whole school teams compete in nationals, and our team did not get enough winning points. |

A hearty congratulations to you guys, Ig. Way to go! This robot works like a skid steer. The bucket, I made sharp as a knife and sharpened it to make it a straight and sharp blade, on a surface grinder. It looked like the cord had some interference a couple times. Thinner, more flexible wire is available for CNC use, so you might think of having him replace that before the next run. -- "I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." --James Madison, Virginia Convention, June 16, 1788 |

I figure an engineering scholarship down the road for your son. Or he'd be one ace backhoe driver in the interim. |

I also recently scrapped a big gaylord box of scrap CNC wire, did not have much, but most such things are actually thicker and less flexible than Ethernet cable. i |

He's well on his way to becoming a tool junkie. To get the cable more flexible, you could strip off the outer jacket, remove whatever strings are inside, and braid (a little bit loosely) the wires together. Another advantage of that is that you end up with a cool multi-color cable. So what's next? Drop in an arduino & joystick and do proportional control? Drop an arduino in each end, add some RF and do away with the cable altogether? -or- Just build a bigger one? The learning possibilities are endless. |
