Okay. That way the neighbors would know whose house it was safe to let your kids play in or whose house you could knock on their door to ask your neighbors a question without getting shot. Or which ones to burgle without getting shot. Or which ones likely have guns to steal. Guns are valuable items on the hot goods circuit - much easier to dispose of for a decent price than a toaster oven and much easier to cart away than a 54" LCD TV. It's a dumb burglar who can't figure out whether anyone's home before breaking in. And it's an exceptionally smart one who can defeat a decent gun safe. Most people don't have their guns in safes Cite. Assuming you're serious, there are many surveys that document this. Here's one: "1.4 million homes with 2.6 million children--stored firearms in a manner most accessible to children. In contrast, 39% of these families kept firearms locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition." http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi.../AJPH.90.4.588 Here's another small study: http://mentalhealth.about.com/librar.../blguns501.htm Most of the studies done on this subject are self-reported, which, as you know, will be biased heavily toward the "responsible" response. The number of homes that have gun safes probably is much lower than the numbers in those reports, and even those numbers tell you that it's less than half. BTW, cut the cross-posting crap. Nobody here appreciates it. -- Ed Huntress |
