Counter-flooding is a long-recognized damage control stratagem in
the USN.

So you drill more holes to counter-flood? Well, you might, but
not any competent navy.

Let this one go, Pyotr.

It was a good metaphor for a rowboat but not for a highly
compartmented, damage-resistant naval vessel, or even the Titanic
which some think might have stayed afloat until the rescue ships
arrived if they had flooded a stern compartment to keep her level
longer.

The problem is that Titanic's reported position was wrong by about 12
miles and the one ship that saw her didn't realize she was the vessel
that had sent the distress call.
