Subject says it all.
Why not start your own newsgroup, "alt.politics"?

And no, I don't know or care about filtering and don't think I should have
to.

They DO have their "own" ngs, but I think intuitively these people know that
the posters in those ngs are inherently dysfunctional and useless, so they
xpost to groups that DO have a productive functional constitutency.

They also don't understand "entropy" or "critical mass".
But, get used to it, cuz they will NEVER go away. Be glad they are not
ACTIVELY sabotaging the group, which is surprisingly easy to do.

The only way to offset their effects is with more on-topic posting, a kind
of UNdiluting.

Many good ngs that had quite a heyday are *totally* dead now.

They are politicians. All of 'em.

This group is certainly no where near what it was ten years ago.
Still, I get questions answered most every time. And i learn a bit,
nor easy for an old fart like me.

I do filter out a few dozen names. And I've learned to not read over
half the posts that still come through. I used to read every one.

Oh well, I've found other groups to spend time, but all in all RCM is
still my favorite spot.

I'm with you. But occasionally, there is information that I need to get to
the masses so quickly that I forget to check the newsgroups it is sent to.
BUT, I am conscious of that, and getting better. Same way with snippage.
At least if a guy is aware, trying, and getting better, that's better than
the clueless.

For most of them, I apply my fly ball philosophy. One pitch, pop, yer outta

I find it like my hometown. Used to be small, now it's big and overcrowded.
But I can still get around it, and find what I need. Still lots of good
people there. Just a little more work, and I have to pay attention. Still
a lot of good info here, and filtering and killfiling helps.

240 alt.politics.* newsgroups, including one at the top which is
just plain alt.politics. And note that the '!' in the .newsrc means
that I am unsubscribed from those newsgroups. If I were subscribed to
any of them, the character would be ':' instead.

There are a number of talk.politics and us.politics newsgroups
as well -- plenty of places to discuss politics without bothering us.

And no, I don't know or care about filtering and don't think I should have
to.

I agree -- but in the absence of civility, and/or a moderated
newsgroup, it *is* necessary. Civility would go a long way towards
fixing things.

Enjoy,

And how do you tell what is the *originating* newsgroup? You
can't depend on the order in which the "Newsgroups: " header lists
newsgroups, and the threads likely were started cross-posted at the
beginning.

Cross-posting *does* have its uses, and the primary example here
is the weekly puzzle which is cross posted between rec.puzzles,
rec.crafts.metalworking and rec.woodworking -- a pretty reasonable
cross-posting given what it is.

This is one reason why I like the ability to score and filter
based on the score. Add a negative score for one comma, and increment
it for the next two or three until you have enough so it is fully
blocked (you can set the threshold at which the killfile takes effect),
and then add a positive score for a particular cross-posting or
"Subject: " line, so I see what I want, and don't see all the other
cross-postings.

The other day there were 273 headers downloaded by Agent, of which
218 were crossposts and delete,d leaving 55 originating from this
newsgroup. Unfortunately some people only reply to crossposts on
this newsgroup and I have to visually filter ( i.e. ignore ) those
ones unless I am curious and read some of them.

Those who automatically limit the "Newsgroups: " header to the
newsgroup in which they read an article can cause things which were
blocked by my anti-crosspost filtering to suddenly appear, so I have to
add the "Subject: " to the filtering too.

It is really getting to the point that you have to be *good* at
setting up and maintaining filters to get something useful out of this
newsgroup. I do wish that it had been formed as a moderated newsgroup,
but I'm not sure that we would have been able to keep moderators, so the
newsgroups could die that way too.

Enjoy,
DoN.

I wanted to form a group for heart surgery survivors. After investigating
all it took, I gave up on it. It may be an easy task, but I found it
daunting. But I do agree that I sometimes wish this were a moderated group.

It *used* to be fairly easy, and became more difficult as the
number of newsgroups increased. This newsgroup also worked quite well
for quite a while un-moderated. Since it was not about controversial
topics, nobody at that time considered it worth the trouble of
moderation. Now is is apparent that this is no longer true.

BTW -- if you *really* want to form that group -- check into the
alt.* newsgroup heirarchy. It is a *lot* easier than forming one in one
of the big 8 heirarchies. (Or are there more, now?)

That top level heirarchy got formed when someone was showing
someone else how to start the formation of a newsgroup, and as an
example was using "rec.f***ing". Somehow, he hit the wrong key, and it
was sent. The debate raged for a long time before it was totally
rejected, and someone decided that it still needed to be formed, and
created the new TLD of "alt" for it, and created it under the name
"alt.sex". Since then, the number of alt newgroups has become
phenomenal, since there is really no way to prevent the formation of a
newsgroup there, and even if the original creator changes his mind and
issues a rmgroup to get rid of it, there are people who re-newgroup
everything which is rmgrouped in alt.*. (I used to run a news server
here at home, and another one at work some time ago.)

Enjoy,
DoN.
