I want to transport a fairly large amount of raw gold within the borders of
the US on an airliner. I wrote to TSA and specifically asked them about
precious metals, and they sent me the info on currency restrictions. I went
to the customs website, but it isn't working.

It's scary to think who's driving this bus.

Does anyone have any personal knowledge, info, or experience in transporting
more than $10k worth of precious metals through TSA, and customs, although
this would be a domestic flight?

Steve

I cast it into a bird statue, painted it black and declared it as art.

Whatever you do don't paint yourself with it. Ask me how I know.

Certainly not I but I'd not even consider considering it in the current
environment. I'd use one of the for hire courier services and insure
the heck out of it.

Use it to buy an airplane and fly it empty. They'll never suspect a
thing.

They probably just mail it.

I suspect the couriers have their own arrangements.

Go not to the Net for answers, for it will tell you Yes and no. And
you are a bloody fool, only an ignorant cretin would even ask the
question, forty two, 47, the second door, and how many blonde lawyers
does it take to change a lightbulb.

Many years ago when I still had money to invest, I bought $10,000 in
gold coins. They were mailed to me at a post office where I picked
them up. I was impressed at the time by how little it cost to make
the delivery. I mailed the coins to a buyer at a later date and was
very impressed by the cost of mailing and insuring the coins. The
company that shipped the coins to me obviously had a blanket policy to
cover any lost packages they mailed.

Send your valuables by mail, disclose the contents to the post office,
and pay for full insurance coverage.

They're set up w/ the security and processes to deal w/ it and not have
the potential questions source/destination that can arise w/ individual.

Probably worse on retrospect w/ large currency stashes than w/ the metal
altho even there w/ the problems of laundering, terrorism channels and
all it just seems terribly risky that some over-zealous TSA twerp could
decide you're a threat.

TSA indicates "no problem, just tell us" but I'm not that trusting of
good judgment by a random employee; witness the foolishness of the 4-yr
old recently.

What might that be? Was the kid foolish, or the TSA
agent?

Saw a program one time about them. Seems like quite a high dollar
occupation, and one with long hours, considering intercontinental travel.
On the program I saw, they have a network of hitching rides on private
corporate jets at times because their clients have "pull", or just that the
jet would like a little something towards sharing the fuel.
