Default Contraption, of merit?

Here is a video my friend made at our meeting of the Chesapeake Area
Metalworking Society.
It is a differential variable speed control mechanism mostly copied
from others' designs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKzTW...ature=youtu.be

The video shows what is going on pretty well. The wheel drive part
got finished only a couple hours before I left for the meeting. It
shows better than
looking at the drive sprocket that is sort of buried. The neutral here
is a bit odd since
it is not disengaged but an infinitely low gear.

I built this from similar designs I had seen to help me understand how
the mechanism
works. The only thing I think is new is the skate wheel differential.
I had no suitable
gears for the differential and thought it would be quieter at high
speeds. Pressure
on the skate wheels is not constant. The idea was to use them as a
true disengaged
neutral but that happened at at one of the high speed ends of the
range and not near low.
Gears would carry torque better.

Differential speed controls have an extremely wide range of ratios
since they can cross zero.

That's an extremely interesting machine, although I believe that being able
to hear the dialog would be a huge improvement.

The videographer needs to discover lapel microphones.

The videographer was the one to the left watching what was being
done, and the "video camera" I believe was his cell phone. He had not
come to the meeting expecting to need to record something like this. :-)

Enjoy,
DoN.

I dunno if you and I saw the same video, DoN, but just to pick ni..

The guy on the left has a phone-looking device on his hip.
There are several AE auto-exposure adjustments that look like a camcorder
iris over-compensation.
A camcorder mic probably wouldn't cancel the reflected background room
noise/conversations, but a decent phone most likely would.

And -- you don't have the URL in here, and I don't remember the
URL of mine. so let me describe the equipment:

1) Metal box with what looks like a wheelbarrow wheel on the top
driven by a chain drive.

2) Assembly inside with skate rollers clustered around a shaft
which extends out the right side of the box, with a ball
balanced crank on it common on machine tool cranks.

3) A lever sticking down the front, with a red ball handle on
the bottom end.

4) As the lever is moved from side to side, the speed of the
wheel changes (easier to see on the sprocket).

5) Voice is mumbling off mic.

6) Not close enough to really see the detail in the skate roller
cluster.

7) When he posted the URL on the CAMS mailing list, he commented
that he had not thought to pick up the camera and go closer for
more detail of the insides. Since it was the day before it was
posted here, and the comment about the sound level rang a bell,
I assumed that it was the same video (fairly long) without going
there again.

The guy on the left has a phone-looking device on his hip.

O.K. But that might just be the carrying case, and the cell
phone itself on a table nearby.

There are several AE auto-exposure adjustments that look like a camcorder
iris over-compensation.

noise/conversations, but a decent phone most likely would.

O.K. It might be a camcorder. I did not go to that meeting.
(The meetings of the CAMS club (Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society)
alternate between Maryland (where this was), and Virginia (where I
usually attend). One per month, Maryland meetings on Thursday, VA
meetings on Tuesday.

The fellow to the left is the one who usually chairs the
meetings, and who often talks about his own projects, too.

Whether it was a cellphone or a camcorder, it was not a
professional setup, but rather a spur-of-the-moment recording, when he
got interested in the project the other had brought.

OKN (Order of Knights -who say- Ni)

O.K. -- But *why* do they say "Ni"?

Enjoy,
DoN.

Yep -- that is the same video alright. And I recognize
individuals. :-)

I do see the cellphone, so he must have had a camcorder along.
But still it was not a really planned photo session.

Enjoy,
DoN.
