How to measure small holes eia .01 - .1" ??
I have been trying to find a set of small gages to measure small holes in jets of carburetors,
something on the order of .01 to about .15 any suggestions or what is the proper name of such gages? ***************** Thank You A true compassionate liberal Anarchist To reply to this email please remove the AT after the kgs in the reply to address as shown above. |

Use standard taper pins. Enter the pin into the hole. Mic the diameter at where it stops or mic the large end diameter and calculate the entry diameter from the taper distance - 1/4" per foot for imperial taper pins, 1 in 50 for metric pins. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * jim Use an appropriately sized sewing needle, one that will enter the hole for some distance but not slip through the hole. Coat this needle with marking blue, marking pen, or soot from a match or candle. Gently place the needle into the hole as far as it will go and give the needle a turn or two. Withdraw needle from hole. A bright circle will be visible where the marking ink/soot was wiped off by the hole wall. Use micrometer to measure the diameter of the needle at the bright circle. Those are called "pin guages"...and in your case.."micro pin gauges" You need .01-.15? How much do you want to spend? VBG Gunner, up to his ass in pin gauges One could not be a successful Leftwinger without realizing that, in contrast to the popular conception supported by newspapers and mothers of Leftwingers, a goodly number of Leftwingers are not only narrow-minded and dull, but also just stupid. If you really want accurate measurements for what you are doing you will set up some test equipment. Take a plastic jug with the bottom cut off and a fitting you can screw the jets into in the cap. Then fill with water and time how long it takes to run out thru the jet. If you have time measurements for .01" and .015" you should be able to determine with reasonable accuracy any jet size in that range since the time to drain a known amount of water will be linear with the size hole. |

That is a huge range 15x for Pin Gages.
Here is one company of many - but you can see the number of pins and ranges. http://www.newmantools.com/meyer/zz.htm#inch I'd pick real numbers and see what fits in several sets. You can use those shanks for gauging, if you get a good US-made set. Use the other ends with a pin vise if you want to enlarge. If you want an inspection set, you get pin gauges, the smallest dia. set is fairly reasonable from most places. See Enco, McMaster, MSC, etc. Stan |
