What you need to do is to measure the battery box and the clearance from the battery to the hood, then buy the largest one that will fit. You can always use extra amperage. Especially in locations that get cold!! |

Thnks Consumer Reports has done car battery tests forever, it seems, yes, there's a difference. But no matter which one you get, they're all boxes of chemicals that start deteriorating the minute they're put together and they all die at about 5-7 years no matter what kind of care they've had. Usually the two top brands are Interstate and Die Hard. Me, I just find out what they've got at the parts joint within walking distance... Stan |

Interstate makes good batteries. Surprisingly enough, I was amazed at how good Ford OEM batteries were when we had Fords. I replaced them at age 8 just because I couldn't believe they'd lasted that long in MN. The replacements were still going strong when we replaced the cars at ages 14 and 15. |

I've also had this kind of "luck" with DieHard batteries. The only batteries I've _ever_ had to replace have been used or off-brand, and every DieHard I've ever bought has outlived the car that I put it in and somehow parted company with. I guess you could call this an endorsement of DieHards, but I'm not getting any kickbacks or anything. :-) Disclaimer: these were ordinary car batteries - truck batteries might have different parameters or something. Cheers! Rich |

P.S.: I've also had good luck with Fords, contrary to "Fix Or Repair Daily" or "For Orphans, Retards, & Dinks" or "Found On Road Dead" - these were obviously coined by Chevy or Chrysler fans. ;-) Keep them in oil, and they'll run forever. ("Fill up the oil and check the gas, please." ;-) ) Admittedly, I had a slant 6 once, and they're essentially indestructible, (had to retire the car when I rolled it) and I once had a Plymouth Gran Fury 350 or so that finally threw the timing chain at about 250,000 miles - I could probably have had it fixed for about a grand, but I didn't have a thousand dollars at the time. )-; And part of what kept the Gran Fury running was a DieHard. ;-D Thanks! Rich My kid brother replaced the timing chain on a 360 Grand Fury one friday afternoon in less than an hour. He was working for me at the time and a car at the gas station across the street wouldn't start after filling up with gas (at about 4PM). We pushed it across the street into the shop, determined the chain had jumped, and the owner asked "how long to fix it, and how much." We told him the book time and my brother said "I think we can have you out of here by supper time". By the time the parts were on the counter he had it apart. My apprentice stood there with his jaw about half way between his belt and his knees and asked "where's that guy keep his spare set of hands?" It was done and back out the door before quitting time!! The customer gladly paid the flat rate time and was home on time for supper. |

Thnks I thought my battery was failing, as the starter would turn a little slowly when it was cold. Then the starter went completely out. When I replaced the starter, the problem went away. The battery is still past it's warranty period, but it's an Interstate, and still working fine with the new starter. Jon |

There are cheap junk batteries, expensive junk batteries, reasonably priced good batteries, expensive good batteries, all the way up to insanely expensive very good batteries. The cheap and expensive junk batteries are the easiest to find. |

Then you'll likely never draw more than 100 amps with the starter. (likely not over 80) A 400CCA battery will handle your cranking just fine with lots to spare- and some outboards draw more than that Chevvy. The older "direct drive" starters could pull over 200 amps when cold - and I've seen some of the aluminum field ones draw over 300 hot!! Have you checked the connection at the 175 amp MegaFuse on the passenger's side of the cowl??? There is a TSB out for a problem on those trucks. You likely have a group 48 battery in that truck - which is 500 to 800 CCA, more or less, depending on the manufacturer and model of battery installed. I think the original Delco was optiminstically rated at 600. Get an MTP H6A Interstate if you want the best available battery for that truck. It is an AGM battery, 800cca 1000ca, 116 reserve capacity battery - and is basically a Hawker Odyssey battery. They will handle moderate deep cycling without harm. They are about $200. And isn't the GM warranty on the original delco good for 5 years? |

Gasser or oil-burner? gasser Just another thought, on a ferguson T20 1956 2 ltr diesel tractor I bought for my sons birthday when he was 9, we picked up from our local reycling place some 5 yrs ago a s/h Bosch calcium/silver, it sayson the label which we fitted to his tractor. Its still on there now, gets run every week at least once, always cranks fast even in the cold and ischarged by a 10 amp dynamo with a standard regulator. well keep it going till it dies then get another from the recycling place!! As for long life batteries, for out outback system, were off the grid, i came by 3 tons of Alcad alcakine batteries in wooden crates there in 316 stainless cells. They were ex railway emergency signalling standby . They were 10 yrsold when I got them. There in use now, we charge each day from the discharge percentage of 85% to 100% over a 1/2hr period. They are expected to have a service life of 50yrs. IF we wanted to replace these from Alcad as new, we would have to find in the region of $50,000.00 I got them for $60,00 a ton from the scrap yard. Cant be bad!!. Ted In Dorset UK. |
