Don't brag about how many and what types of guns you have. 2. Secure them properly 3. Remember rule one. This also applies to other valuable possessions. Wes |

Rangersucks could join my Liberal Militia. d8-) I'm short of ammo, though, and my favorite range has closed. I have to look around for a new one. Meantime, I only load .32 H&R Magnum and .38 Spl. I have to get some .45 ACP dies, seeing as how we have a shortage. Ranger, I can bring .22, .32 S&W Long (Colt Pocket Positive),. .32 H&R Magnum, .38 Spl., and, if I can get ammo, .45 ACP. However, I sympathize with the feeling. Being a pistol instructor puts much higher demands on your teaching skills. On the basis of a 3 hour safety lecture, I was willing to go into the range the next night and give 15 total strangers loaded handguns. I've taught several hundred people how to shoot, and we never had a serious accident. I typically had an assistant instructor for every 2 or 3 students. By the end of class, most of the students could keep all their shots on a standard 50 foot target. This was at MIT, and we tended to get reasonably bright students, although there were exceptions. I now teach as an assistant instructor with another club. Their course are open to the public. All live firing is done with an instructor working individually with each student. About 15 years ago they had a woman sign up for the course with the sole purpose of committing suicide. She managed to get one shot into her head before an instructor could stop her. She survived, but with extensive brain damage. It still gives me the willies just thinking about it. Doug White |

As I said, they didn't read and the notice that their property was going up on tax sale was not understood. Grandma in a small house on a remaining bit of the property. The date they had the farm was most likey in the 1920's. Lodi is in that packed area of population that makes NJ the most densely populated state in the nation. I'm on the extreme southern edge of that sprawl. A mile from my house is a county park with a small lake that's completely surrounded by development. But when my uncle moved here, in 1948, he used to hunt rabbits with his beagle and his12-guage, down in that swamp that is now a lake. It's sad to hear about you're family's little farm. I just had a talk with a guy who owns one of the last remaining farms in New Paltz, NY. He said the neighbors give him poisonous looks, wishing he would sell so they could build more McMansions. Every time I drive through Sussex County, NJ, I'm saddened by the declining number of farms and the increasing number of huge houses. And they call that "progress." |

My parents' last house in Princeton (actually in Rocky Hill) was surrounded by woods and farms, as late at the late '70s. I could walk to Rock Brook, which was a trout stream in the spring. Now it's all developments. If you live long enough, I guess you see it everywhere. There are no chickens anymore, in the neighborhood where I was born in Vineland, either. There are still lots of low-roofed houses, though, if you know what I mean. d8-) (Chicken coops converted into houses) -- Ed Huntress |

Might be interesting to survey those neighbors opinions on the loss of the rain forests. reply: I know the first thing I do every morning is to go ask what the neighbors think. Of course I don't get a lot done, but I know what they think. But then, I can't get a lot done, because each of them has a different answer and opinion of the problem, so I do nothing and go nowhere. Last time I had neighbors like that, I moved, and the problem resolved instantly. I sold the house to a Brazilian couple who painted it bright yellow and key lime and put up a lot of wrought iron with all the decorations painted BRIGHT glow in the dark colors. I had many other offers, but the Brazilians seemed like the right way to go. Scuttlebutt got back that they were doing weird things with chickens and goats in the back yard with lots of chanting. Probably to ward off all those poisonous looks. Went by there, and now the house is in foreclosure, so it's getting pretty decrepit looking. But the yellow and key lime is still blazing away. Steve |
